Apparently the turn-around isn't deep enough anymore!
I still say you haven't lived until you've had to pass a freighter at night on the Saginaw river in your fishing boat....

I remember one foggy morning on the St. Mary's crawling to my favorite perch fishing spot when a fog horn almost blew us off of the river. I then noticed a 1,000 footer anchored right in front of our path. It does wake you up!:yikes:
Do you know if anybody is catching any perch in Saginaw Bay near Bay City??

I agree ! Nothing like scooting around a frieghter when they have the side thrusters going full blast at the turn-around basin :yikes: ! Real pucker factor when the boat JUMPS about 10' sideways:SHOCKED: - Bob

I know this doesn't have to do anything with the Detroit river but one time my dad and I were going salmon fishing out of ludington but i guess it was to wavey. So we fished the manistee lake or whatv ever that body of water is called and the passenger fairy was right behind us in the dark and it scared the CRAP out of us.

I must be a magnet for those BIG BOATS:yikes: ! Many years ago was out off of Honor MI. trolling in the fog(pea soup) for Spring Kings/Steelhead. Had the VHF on and heard the Car Ferry contact the docks it was nearing port. Yeah - You guessed it, the dang thing came out of the fog and had to da#* near pull the downriggers off the back of the boat getting out of the way:help: . The turning-basin mentioned earlier is on the Saginaw River, but You have to watch it Bassin' the River when a Ship goes by. Hard to believe that they pull the water out on the way by - can bottom the boat out if You aren't carefull. Does create a quick Bass/Walleye bite stirring things up tho:fish: - Bob

Comming from the bay into the saginaw river we saw one of those freights heading our way about 8:00 at nite, we didnt really know what to do  so we tried to beat it to the docks there off patterson rd. We made it tied up the boat just in time for it to past by, you guessed it, BIG mistake!!! When she went by sucked out all the water out and started pulling the boat back out to the river :yikes: , next thing you know snapped the tide lines :help: and then the water started rushing back into the docks and started a pinball effect with the boat between the docks:dizzy: . Luckly we came out with minor battle wounds  . Lesson learned :banghead3 dont try to beat it in, I guess just hang tight for a sec :hide: .

kp57,
Saw the same thing happen on the 4th of july at high Noon with about 30 boats in line to take out at the launch. What a disaster that was. LOL pinball effect, I know what you mean.

I hear ya on the side thrusters! Passed one once at Saginaw river mouth dumping coal and about blew us into the boats come up river. Not as much room there as it looks with a freighter and two boat traffic:dizzy:
Also coming from behind one about 11:00 one night a few years back near island at sag. river mouth, and after going around in the pitch black, didn't think about the big ***** wake until we about went air born:SHOCKED:
