I remember when it was no big deal getting 50 at a time. You could fill a 5 gal. bucket in 10 dips. Now your doing good to get 50 in a night. They say its all because of the Salmon, I think thats alot of BS.

just wondering.....

it seems that the majority of people in PH are letting the nets "soak" for a while before they pull them.

this is way different than how we used to do it. although it was very tiring, we basically did this.

cone shaped net made out of steel mesh with a 10lb plate attaced at the bottom of the cone. 50 ft rope, tied to the railing (downtown PH park). toss the net out, so that the opening is facing up river. let the net go (being pushed by the current) until the rope is tight, and then pull her up (from your tie off point). empty and repeat, over and over until your tired or you have your fill of smelt. this way, we were pulling the net through the current, and scooping up all of the little buggers in our path.

any thoughts?

Some folks still do that method. Others have taken the easier path. Drop the basket - set up some rods and kick back. Pull the baskets periodically and kick back some more.

Fished from around 3:00 until 10:00 last night at the county building, seen 1 brown knocked off at the wall. A ton of shiners last night, did manage 1 smelt.

...A ton of shiners last night...

"A ton" is probabaly an under statement. I stopped by the south end of the plant yesterday afternoon and there was at least "two tons" of shiners schooling off the wall. LOL

BTW...congrats on your smelt Mike!
