Smallmouth in the thumb

A few years ago, I fished a river in the thumb that had some smallmouth in it. It seemed like I went just before memorial day but I can't be sure. Would one find smallmouth in thumb area rivers this early in the year?

Anywhere, but i wouldn't fish for them until the season opens.;)
