ok...here is my question. i hope someone can give me some help with this. i would like to go camping at a 'rustic' campground this spring/summer but i like to take a shower everyday. i can't go to sleep with dirt or mosquito spray on me and i have to shampoo and condition my hair every day. i was at meijer or someplace in the camping section and seen a 'portable' shower that you hook up to a water source. do you think these could be hooked up to the 'potable' water pumps that are at these rustic state parks, etc...? in other words...how would i use a 'portable' shower when i'm tent camping...
 :fish:

Yes there is a way to shower. The below shower tent and a heater that runs off propane and batteries. There is several ways to get shower water besides the one I showed. They have smaller models that sell for around $100 dollars. Just put water in a 5 gallon pail from the hand pump at park, put the pump hose in from your battery operated unit and turn on. When all else fails jump in the river and lake.

You sure can with one of those shower bags. I've used it myself and on a sunny day it will get plenty warm. If you are carefull you can get almost two showers out of one of those.

Howdy-

I've had one of those "Solar Showers" for over 25 years; they work great! You fill the bag with water, then lay it in a spot where it will be in sun for most of the day. One side of the bag is clear (this faces up towards the sun), the other side is black (and as we all remember from Jr. High science class, dark colours absorb heat more readily). The water gets surprisingly warm (to the point I'd suggest testing it before taking the plunge).

The only thing you need to plan is where you'll hang it, and how you'll get it up high enough. 5 gallons @ 8 lbs. per means you'll be lifting 40 lbs., usually over you head. Two people can make this easier; on holds it up while the other secures it.

The hose has either a spring clip on it, or has a pull head, so the water doesn't constantly run as it does in your home shower. Run water and get wet; apply shampoo; rinse; soap up body; rinse. Have had many instances where two or sometimes three people can get a decent shower out of each bagfull.

I kept an 18" loop of parachute cord tied to the handle of mine; served to secure it in most cases. In the desert we had to get a bit more inventive when hanging it up; not many 'real' trees to be found....;)

We never had the fancy shower stall, either. I always saved our old shower curtains and threaded the loops with parachute cord; voila! ready-made shower stall! Just wrap one or more around suitable trees/bushes/shrubs. An old shower caddy lashed to a tree is perfect for holding soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.

Just be carefull. If it's really hot outside the water will get so hot it will burn you.

Our Zodi shower was awesome last summer while we were building our cabin on our 40 in Houghton County. We spent most every weekend from May through November up there living in the popup camper until we got the cabin weathered in. We got the model that uses 2 small propane tanks and has cables that clip to a 12 volt battery for the pump. The Zodi had no problem warming up the ice cold creek water for hot showers, which were heavenly after a hard day's work had you layered with sweat, bug dope, sawdust, and chain saw exhaust. I don't know if my slave labor (my wife and son) could have hung in there without it - highly recommended!

Fishinggirl - don't forget to send us pictures when you try out your new shower!

(Sorry - couldn't resist :) )

Your last option is a bilge pump for a boat. It runs off a car battery. You heat your water and put the bilge pump in and it pumps the water to you.

We have ours on a switch on deer camp. Works great. Charge the battery with the generator or car and heat water in over your stove and pump it where you need it with the bilge pump. Pumps run $15-30.

pretty fancy for the cabin we hoist a 5 gallon bucket with favorite temp water in it in the shower room off our cabin we used to use the shower bag but it was a pain to fill by yourself pouring the hot water holding the funnel and then to hold the bag now we have a 20 gallon stainless tank on the back of the wood stove with a 1.5 " ball valve now its turn valve fill bucket to desired hight add cold water to achieve desired temp if to hot and enjoy

P s dont dilly dally between cabin and shower when temps below 32:D
