Thanks chad 1. Some day you will have to show me how you did that.
This poll was on aol yesterday and I heard today that 2 out of 3 people voted NO!
It was a Topic on WDFN this morning and a guy called in and was allmost in tears talking about his dog that had passed on. No way would he trade that dog for a million dollars. Another guy called in and said he would shot fido himself for that much money.
The poll did not say what would happen to the pet.
I have 2 dogs right now but I got to admit it would be "see ya".
I would draw the line at some dollar figure but I better not say.
To each their own.

Too unrealistic of a scenario, it would never happen!

Maybe we should re-phrase and ask:

I would abandon my pet for the following minimum amount ___________.

This would allow a much deeper and realistic insight.

Anyhow, I just hate "If I had a million dollars" type questions! So dont read too much into this post.

It does not come as a surprise to me that 85 % of hunters would take the cash when 66 % of the population would take the pet.
To put it plain and simple if I had to chose between giving my offspring the best of everything for the rest of there lives or keeping a animal, it's a no brainer.
You guys that put a animal on that same pedistal as your future sound a little "petaish" to me.

I just think that when it comes to common sense we hunters are way ahead of the pack.
Funny thing is I am sure that I am more of a animal lover than those 66% that said save the animal.

I was going to make this post light hearted. But Rick, you just changed my mind. Petaish? Whatever. Tell your offspring to get a job. When you get a pet, you make a commitment to that pet. I'm almost beyond words at this point. Every dog I've ever had has asked nothing more from me than to scratch his eats every once in awhile. You'd trade that loyalty for money? That's exactly what's wrong with the world today.

I knew a guy who once traded one of his rabbit beagles for a new Ford Ranger.

But my dog is worth more to me than any truck...

Mike-

I was going to say the same thing in my post but didnt want to sound too judgemental since the whole premise is an impossibility. But the part that I kinda forgot and cant stress enough is the responsibility aspect. Loyalty and commitment are not something to be taken lightly.

I am not talking about people who breed dogs for cash, as there is no "relationship" that is being built or implied...that will fall on the purchasers conscience.

I also am not talking about those of us who made tongue in cheek replies to the thread...there have been times where I wanted to strangle my two dogs, but when I come home after a bad day...to see them so excited that my walking in the door has made their day. How can you put a price on that kind of loyalty and affection?

Thanks Mike for the insight and great pics.

Add 40 lbs and probably 10 more years and you have a dead ringer for my last dog!

13 years and a Lab that loves to eat will get you a big dog. Diabetes did her in, causing blindness and finally partial paralysis. Daily injections were the norm. Broke my heart when the time finally came where the quality of life was no longer there!

NEMichsportsman: You say that the premise is impossible. Well let's tweak the example just a little. Let's say we are talking about a successful race horse that someone just might pay $1,000,000 for. Does this change anything? You now have a bona fide offer for the animal. Do you sell? I still do if I think that fee will make me more than the horse.

Personally, I think it all comes down to, how CLOSE you are to the animal. :o

I have owned many dogs over the years and currently own 2. I have had the brit since he was 6 weeks old and he just turned 11 years old. The setter just turned 1 year old in January.
The brit has gone totally blind in the past few months but otherwise his health is good. I have no plans of putting him down just because he is blind. He has gained 15 pounds in the last 4 months because blind dogs don't get much exercise.
Yes, I have a conscience but these are animals, not one of my 3 boys or for that matter my wife.
To say you would not take $1,000,000.00 for that animal I have to question if you are being truthful to yourself.

I don't know how much more truthful you want? I wouldn't take a million dollars for my dog. I didn't aquire him for profit.

You'r right Mike. I'm sure you have your reasons and I have mine.
The truth is we will never have to prove it.
I'd say this picture of my 1 year old setter is worth close to that.
So Is the thought of being able to sent one of my kids to the best schools in the country.
Oh well, sorry about the peta thing.

Water under the bridge Rick.

My parents gave me the option of getting good grades and a scholarship, or paying for it myself. Either way, I was going to college. I was kinda' partial to the scholarship idea! LOL

youper-

Your point is taken. That is more realistic, but my understanding of the race horse industry, is that it is run more like a business. I have never heard anyone say that their "pet" is going to be in the Kentucky Derby.

Besides it is a lot different having your dog live with you as part of the family.I cant imagine having a Thoroughbred curl up at the foot of my bed....but you might have a bigger house than I do!!!????!!;)

I probably have gotten as much mileage outta this thread as I can...

Hey Terry,(wormdunker). Is that a great looking dog or What. You did the breed proud. Glad I went out of the way to find him.
For those who don't know I found my setter on this site and Drove about a hour or so to see him. Love at first sight.
Since then met up with breeder/wormdunker twice and it has been a new found friendship. Also Met Harold/ dogman at woods and water last Sept.
