I hear guys talking about river curing there spawn. Is that all you have to do to the eggs to harden them up to tie is take them out of the fish right away and put them in the stream or do you have to cure them in a salt mixture after that. I always cure mine with a salt and sugar mixture works decent but that way seems easier if thats all you have to do.

Just rinse in river water until they firm up. Works pretty well for me, I normally keep a few tupperware containers in my car. If I need to do any river curing I just use those and change the water occasionally. I also know of a few guys that take womens stockings with them and fill them with eggs and leave them sit in the flowing current for a while.

Right - for loose eggs. Skein eggs do not cure well with river water.

I don't do anything to pump when I get some. All I do is milk it into a ziplok, then let it sit for a day or two. The water it's already in from the hen seems to toughen it, and they are nice and firm for tying, and still have great color and smell. From my experiance river-curing spawn, the bags turn white fast, which I don't like, though that's mostly what fish see. And I've had loose salmon eggs last for AWHILE this way, like a month in the refrigerator, but I do set it a bit cooler also.
