Was held up on the trail between Wakefield & Bergland on 1/17/02 because of a snowmobile wreck. A groomer operator out of Bergland and I were talking. He said they (snowmobilers) run between 60 and 100 mph on those trails. Where he got his facts I'm not sure. He used Rockland to Houghton as an example on the 100 mph that his grand son and some friends had did. He wasn't to polite on the idiot type names for the 22 year old kid he is by grandpa's stanards. Where the wife and I had lunch we were the only one's not drinking beer

The majority of the deaths now are because of speed. Not drinking anymore
A first year rider that is 25 years old+a ZR 800 with mods+speed=disaster
Everyone thinks they can ride like a bat out of h***. I use to think this too until i found out the hard way. Everyone needs to lay off the throttle a little bit.

Some people learn the hard way!
My friend hit a thick crack in the ice at tip up town in Houghton Lake a few years back. He was doing about 90 he and the sled flew in the air it landed on top of him.He got a $30,000 ride on
the UofM chopter .He lives with me now becouse he can't work from all the pain he still has from that day.
IT DON'T MATTER HOW GOOD YOU CAN RIDE THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU GO TO FAST!!!!!!!!!

800 & 1000 cc machines are just to slow. I think the goverment should force the manifactuers to build faster sleds with bigger engines at least 1500cc. And have 2000cc units on the market by 2005. NOT NOT NOT NOT
Ya right, what we have now is to damm fast and the atv's arn't far behind.

I hate to hear about the dieing of snowmobilers, but if one person dies hunting with a gun, its tragic, horrible, and guns are BAD!!
Look at how many people die on sleds every year, but they dont but that on national news for everyone to look down upon.
Just my two cents

Last night on the news they announced that another person died snowmoibling. She was a 47 year old women from Fenton Mi. down below. Tht story said she ran a stop sign and hit a tree near Bergland and was dead by the time they got her to Iron Wood hospital. Thats all the facts that was on the news, But guessing I'd say speed was a factor, but then maybe driveing under the influnce could have been.

I would have to say the majority of riders are drinking. The trails lead from bar to bar and then a gas station. We were up north once and the cops were stopping people at the gas stations. They had trailer after trailer of impounded sleds. You cant say people drinking isnt the main reason people die on sleds. Now speed is why they wrecked, but drinking made them invincible!!

My cousin was killed last weekend in the UP. He was going too fast ans couldn't make a curve. He was 34.

Sorry to hear of your loss Stump Jumper. There will not be any more deaths for the 2001/2002 season as it's been so hot there isn't any more snow left. Folks in some areas here have to worry if they may dround though.
A man from Newberry in his 40’s was killed last week sometime around 4/5/02. I’m not sure which County Luce or Alger County up by Lake Superior between Grand Marie and Deer Park I think.

Boehr,
Have you gotten a total figure for the season yet. I was wondering since I just got a letter from a lobby group based in Michigan and they are taking up an issue I don't feel has the intrest of Michigan snowmobilers at heart.
Thank you
Al
