Need advice..How much smoke should a 9.9 4 stroke be putting out after the breakin period? Or for that matter should it even smoke at all during the break-in or after? Can I expect it to decrease the more I run it. Or should I contact the dealer? Need a little advice from you guys with 4 strokes...thanks

My Merc. 25 Bigfoot didn't hardly smoke at all, even during breakin. Might need to check compression to see if it is within spec. If not may have a bad or broken ring.

Slivoskisp,

Double check your crank case making sure you have the correct amount and not over filled. A four stoke shouldn't smoke and like Capt Tan Can said you may have a defective piston/ring assembly or bad valve guide.

During the breakin I had to empty quite of bit of oil to get to the correct level. I did this right on the water. I am wondering if the over fill of oil could have damage something. I ran it for about 3 hrs before I checked the oil.

I've seen quite a few four strokes run and never really seen any smoke from any of them. Sounds like yours is a new motor. I'd ask the dealer about it.

too much oil could cause excessive pressure in the crank case and blow out a seal somewhere also at this time of year are you sure its smoke and not steam

H-H,

Steam is what I am hoping for. Yes, it is new I have 8 hrs on it now...so I am just wraping up the break in period. I took a whiff at the smoke but could not smell any oil or fuel. I was running in about 36 degree water so steam is a possibilty. I do not have any experience with 4 strokes so I do not know if this is normal, I hope someone can comment on this. My big motor (2 stroke) was not smoking though. At the dealer when they fired it up it smoked a bit, they told during/after the breakin it would not smoke anymore. It ain't happening. I think I'll give it a few more outings and if still persists ...back to the dealer.

I think you should at least call the dealer and describe the condition to them, even if it’s steam it could be that you are getting water in a combustion chamber.
It’s a brand new motor and I think you should just play it safe.
