I have a digital one and the deer are always in the 2nd picture. I have mine set to take 2 pictures back to back. I have a Moultrie 1.3mp and I really like it.

Which trail cameras do you have? Which digital camera that is leased expensive with out flash? Do not have big dollars!!
Personally I havent had any spook but Ive only been using mine "stealth cam" for less than a year now.... There are cameras out there that use an infrared flash at night and you get black and white pictures.

put the camera about 6 feet up in the tree angled down and the deer will just think that its lightning try it it really works

IT DOES SPOOK DEER!!!!! For everyone who thinks it does not, have you personally watched your camera take pictures of deer?? probably not, me and isaac_62 witnessed our cameras scare the hell out of 10 does in an area that hardly has any hunting pressure!!! you might get another picture a minute later, but its probably because they are so curious by nature... i recommend for everyone to get a infrared camera for night time

On the other hand, my stealth cam took seven pictures in a row of a buck one night, set to take a pic 5 minutes apart! The buck was there at least 30 minutes and did not spook, and he came back the next two nights also.
Say ya to da U.P., eh?

In my opinion, I don't think it is the flash that scares them. If that were true, they would really freak out when there is a lightening storm or where car headlights are prevalant. I think it is the sound that scares them and that is why digital doesn't scare them as much because they are much more quiet without the film winding. Also, in my experience, different deer react differently. I have a picture similar to the one above and it is the 3rd picture in a row of that buck so he actually walked up to the camera to investigate. For this reason, I no longer put my camera where I hunt.

Definately scares them! No doubts. I have 8 cameras right now, 4 film-4 digital, and only one is an IR. In the future I'll only buy digital and IR...seems to be the only combination that doesn't spook deer, although some are certainly more tolerant than others, and I can get away with MUCH more in ag land than wilderness or big woods.

Without a doubt scares deer. I've got a digital over one of my food plots. I've spent many hours sitting over the plot in the summer and without fail deer are spooked the majority of the time the camera goes off. Some startle and then go back about their business and others will startle and move to a different area. I'm also convinced that some deer (probably mature, wise deer) will not go anywhere near the camera if they see it go off on another deer ahead of them. I've witnessed deer change course and move around the backside of the camera in order to avoid the flash. As someone else posted, I would never put one at any of my stand sites.

I'm not sure if the flash scares them or not. Like the others, I've had multiple pics of the same deer within a few minutes. My thought is if the flash/camera is silent then all they get is a blinding light from an unknown source. I think the scent left on the camera scares them more...

I say the flash does not scare them. For those who have watched, haven't you also seen deer flinch at the sight of a bug?! Or perhaps you've also witnessed a stick or something else on the ground move when hit by a gust of wind? I've also witnessed deer spooking for no apparent reason that I could see. In all cases, even though they might flinch or show that they are scared, close to 100% of the time they calm right down.
Deer are extremely wired by instinct. They jump at the slightest thing. But that does not mean that a flash scares them. For sure the forwarding of film in a 35mm camera will scare them, but they would probably get used to it. As long as something doesn't move while making the noise, all should be well.
I've not only witnessed deer and trail cams but also have seen pictures that to me shows they are not spooked with the flash. I also agree with buckwhacha about putting the camera a little higher and aiming it down somewhat.

Yes it does scare the deer. Many times the same buck will not come back to the same area. Atleast I don't see them in many pics after the first one. :dizzy:

That's because the neighbor shot all those bucks! When we get together, tdejong, I'll show you some pics that might change your mind about flash scaring deer.

I saw some good shots taken off a Cuddleback at our last Tue evening meeting. It was mentioned that the latest version coming out or just out will have infrared flash to avoid the bright flash scare. True/false?

I have been using a 35mm cam for 3 years now and I allways get multiple pics of the same buck. I have 12 pics of the same 10 point in one night. I am sure there are times that it spooks them off . but not allways.

I have a cam behind the house where i can just look out the widow and see it.
Many, many times i have watched it take pics of the deer that are there and it usally spooks them a bit and they hop off a ways and then circle right back.
It usally spooks them a couple times then after that they barely raise their heads. This is in the winter while feeding on corn.
Here is a buck i got on a different cam 2 nights in a row.
Ist pic is Oct 7th at 3:44am.

I have pics of bucks or does hightailing it out of dodge on the 2nd, back to back pic. But I also have pics of that same buck back into the spot light and smiling for the camera. I think they spook but like anything else that isn't a threat but spooks them, they calm down and deal w/ it. It's the scent going to and from the camera that we leave that needs the attention.
