Heading up tonight. Wife's grandmother lives right on Rifle near Alger (exit 202) close to bridge about 4 miles East of 33. I have fished this area in Spring and Summer for Brown's and Rainbows, but never for Steel. My question is this, is it worth my time to hit the Rifle in this area (or nearby) or am I better off making the 40 minute trek to my home water the Ausable. Not looking for specifics. The strecth I normally fish on the rifle is quite shallow, but I do know of a few holes nearby, more wondering if traditionally any steel would have made it up this far by this point in the season. Please let me know thoughts, any advice you want to share. Thanks- Krull

Thanks to those who sent me PM's. Although I did not end up in the spots mentioned, I at least was given the confidence to go out and give it a shot. I will say this, what a beautful morning on the river. Waded down to the only area I knew of nearby and within reasonable distance (land around is all private so I did not want to trespass so I stayed in the water) I had little to no expectations, but was just happy to be out on the water. Imagine my surprise the first time my float dunked! Landed a nice 10 lb chrome hen on spawn with about my 6th cast. Quickly reloaded, next cast had another one on, which I lost. Put on another bag, next cast boom, a 6 lb drop back buck. What a morning. Sorry but pictures were taken with disposable camera, will scan them in if I get a chance. Anyway, Sat AM once again reminded me what a great state we live in and how many opportunities are out there. This will definitely open me up to trying different rivers more often.

good job krull, sounds like you did better than i did.went farther upstream than the place i told you about.caught lots of small browns and rainbows with only one twenty inch buck steelhead.looked undernourished to me.no other steelhead with that fish that would bite.hopefully they will make it up there soon.will be up there again this weekend.

It is go time. Can't take Friday off. My vote is East side, with the weather changing, all hell is going to break loose.
