I was just looking at the planting numbers of walleye the DNR has put into Lake Chemung (off 96, west of 23). 46K ish in 1997, then an additional 29K sunfish, 31K eyes in 1999 and another 28K in 2000.
Anyone ever ice fish this lake for some of those walleye we've been paying for?
I'm thinking about trying it out tommorow, MLK day.
I could use some input. I know nothing about this lake.

I didnt know that they planted eye's there......used to live on the lake about 12 years ago......my sugestion would be to find the group of locals.......who would know better where they are.
there is a parking area about 1\2 mile east of the exit from 96, straight out from the parking area aprox 1\2 way across the lake is a shallow rocky area (island ?). anywhere around the dropoff's there should be a good place to start.

lake chemung has good numbers of decent sized gills.I have also seen and caught some nice pike. Perch are average no big ones. As for walleye never caught one on chemung. Also descent bass fishing in summer. good luck

There are a few walleyes walleyes in Chemung but hardly numbers that would justify targeting them at this time.
There are many decent gills and crappies in the lake and
very nice northerns.
Forget the area out from the roadside park---its hit and
miss for medium size perch for the most part.
Your best bet is to park at the DNR access off Hughes Road
on the North side. Hughes is the road at the red light on
Grand River at Wilson Marine. The launch is about a half
a mile down on the right.
Straight west of the launch is an area that's 42' deep and
the gills/crappie suspend out there in the winter. Gills
are 4 to 8 feet off the bottom while crappies are 15 to 20
feet off the bottom. (a good fishfinder is a big help) you
can also get nice pike in the same area with tipups set
about 20 feet down.
PM me if you need additional info on other spots in the
lake.

Sorry, I must be half asleep. The DNR launch is on the
left off Hughes Road.

i dont know much for ice fishing out on the rock island off of grand river, but i know there are tons of nice bass in there during the summer.
also the area that walleyechaser is talking about is a great place for ice fishing. nice and deep, you always see the locals out there fishing it.
i know as a kid i use to wade out in the swimming area where we lived with a basstopper worm and kill the bass. you always knew they were coming in when you saw all the minnows swimming towards shore jumping out of the water.
broncbuster and i might go there today so i will post a report when i get back if we go. not sure if he is up to sitting on the ice or not.

If you guys get out this afternoon, please give me a report back on ice thickness west of the dnr launch.
I'll probably get out there in the next few days work permitting.
I can always catch a limit a nice crappies or gills, whichever I'm after in that spot.
Maybe we can get together this week and I'll show you how predictable those fish are in the winter and a couple of tricks that'll get you more fish.
On the other hand, I might learn a trick or two from you guys.
I've been part of 2 articles done on ice fishing in that exact spot
although the articles never mentioned the lake or location because that's the way I wanted it kept.
