A spud makes to much noise or is it a hand or gas auger that makes to much noise? You know I farted In the shanty the other day and boy was it noisy. You think that might have scared the fish? No but it sure scared my buddy and I had the shanty all alone for awhile:D
Now seriously I have a atlantis cam and last year when I was fishing and watching the fish there was people all around me spuding and augering with both gas and hand and it din't scare the fish in the least. Only time they where a little spooky was when we where fishing really shallow water and then they would move away a little then right back.
I remember when I was a kid my dad would let me go in a big circle around are tip-ups with the snow machine and about 5 to 10 minutes after the flages started popping up.
I catch my share of fish and I use a GAS auger and I am not all that quit. :p chad1

I agree. After fishing many years on Portage and Arcadia lakes in a shanty I saw the same reactions to noise. For the most part the fish ignore it. Ice fishing in shallow water can be affected by noise, especially if the target fish are trout. Farting has no adverse effect as far as the fish go. As a matter of fact there are some shanty anglers who claim that a quality phlagelistic move can bring the fish in. My experience suggests this might be true. However, further study would be needed in order to verify if this is factual or opinionated.

Farting is usefull to warm the shanty during deep freeze fishing!:p

depend on how deep the water your fishing in and ice thickness saw the perch run for cover on 2in of ice in 2fow just having someone walk by the shanty:( have fire up the gas auger and drop a jig down and start catching right away :) thicker ice and deeper water

What do you do when you hear a funny noise? Do you run like hell, or do you go see what it is?

Granted ice thickness and water depth have alot to do with it too. But don't be giving me dirty looks when I'm hammering a hole in 20ft of water to fish for gills!

Windam, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you're a fishing buddy of mine! He usually provides the heat of that sort whenever we go fishing, shanty or no. (His only computer is in a box in his attic though, so I'm pretty sure it's not you.)
This topic reminded me of the last time I went out for perch this year. I found the fish in about 4" or water or so. (Saw them darting around under the ice when I was walking in; call the odds on that one!) Anyways, I had em in the hole when I let a fart go; fish scattered in all directions instantly! I was pretty proud of that one! ;) (Still haven't managed to beat my dad's old hunting buddy though... he made one guy physically vomit when walking out duck hunting. That's gotta be the ultimate! :) )
The only thing I can think of is that the fish were so skittish being in that shallow, that the noise travelled through my sled, through the ice, and into the water. And when I said they were skittish, I mean that they were *SKITTISH*! Snow machine goes by 75 yards away and they run for cover and don't come back for 2-3 minutes.

If I ever see you on the ice I'll remind myself not to pull your finger!
