View Full Version : fireline replacement
just wondering if you guys who use fireline replace it every year. i was going to do it today, but it got me to thinking if it was even necessary. its not like monofilament where it gets brittle or stretched. Anyway at 12-15 bucks for a 125 yard roll i figured it was worth asking.

when i use fireline, mainly for jigging and skipping docks with spinning gear, i always use a "base" of mono to fill the spool about 1/2 to 2/3 then knot the fireline and mono and use about 1/2 of the 125 yards of fireline to finish filling the spool. this way, you will have the remaining 1/2 next time you feel the need to change it. rarely do i cast 50 to 70 yards with it, and it seems to last fairly well in the conditions that i use it.
not sure what condition or age your existing line is, but if it is fraying badly or a couple years old i would change it. alot of my fishing will fray the line about 5 or 10 feet above my lure, so i just cut that off and re-tie.
did this make any since? hope it helps....:fish:
yeah makes sense. my line looks fine i put it on last year. im gonna fish with it this weekend and make sure the line has not frayed anywhere further up. thanks

Fire line actually recomends that use use a backer on your spool so the line will not slip. I like to use fly line backing on my set up. Back to the main question no i dont feel it is a necesity to change your line every year. I have used fireline so long that it turned white. Was still strong and was not frayed past five to ten feet up.

Raf,
Spool up another reel from the one that has the older line, this puts the older line down first giving you the fresh stuff from the end of your old spool.

Yea, my Fireline also seemed to be frayed, but the line deeper on the spool, which doesn't make contact with the reel guides or water, was in near perfect condition. So here's what I did.
I had Fireline on one reel. I reeled this onto another reel. Then I reeled that line onto yet another reel, not the original. From this third reel, I reeled the Fireline back onto the original reel, thus reversing the line.

I would go with a differnt line, something like Power Pro I feel it is a better line.

I used fireline for 10 years and used to just reverse it onto another spool
as others have mentioned.
I now only use Power Pro..does not fray and get the ice buildup
like fireline.
Outlasts the fireline 2 to1...IMO.

I would replace it, but I abuse my fireline on rocks all yera and use it almost everyday. If you're using light lune put a whole spool on. I use 6lb. and if I'm fishing for cats, they run forever and I don't want them running my line out. I figure $13 fills your spool for an entire year verses replacing mono 3 or 4 times. I say put new stuff on. You'll curse yourself when you lose that big one.
My opinion: don't go with power pro. I personally think it's crap. Less feel and horrible hooksets.

I have found that I don't use more than 60 yards of line for the fishing I do with fireline, so I cut a 125 yd spool in half, spool on the first 61 yards over mono backing, fish with it for the season, then reverse it for the next year and repeat the process with the other half for the next two years. Sometimes I can get a season and a half out of one length of line before I reverse it. Fireline can look really nasty, before it is seriously weakened. Never had a break off. The reasons I reverse the line is because I lose casting distance and the knots got harder to tie, once the line gets real "fuzzy".

My guess it would all depend on how much you've fished it, how it looks as far as scaring/nicks. Some people really abuse line while others are fairly easy on there's. Even at 12 to 15 bucks a spool its not that much if you consider how much you depend on your line. ;)
The reversal idea sound like a good idea. I do the same with some of my mono's but I'm looking at 100 to 150 yards......:)

I have kept fireline on one rod for 3 years with no noticable problems. Cut back the faded/frayed portion and it was fine. Changing it to power pro this year because it casts much better than fireline. Fireline was good, but this stuff is much better.
thanks for the replies. i am going to try reversing the line because i have been really rough on that line in the one year its been on there.

It can't hurt to replace it. Any doubt should make you replace it.

replace it. If you don't have confidence in it, get rid of it.

With respect...
Replace it. Why risk hurting a fish and possibly killing it because of your year-old line broke. It's disrespectful to other fisherman in general to risk hurting a fish for no reason just because you don't wanna spend 10 bucks.
Just my $0.02
i used it today and it is fine. dont worry my 1 year old 20lb fireline is alot stronger then most peoples monofilament. Not to be an ***** but this has nothing to do with disrespecting other fisherman. i wish half the people out there were as respectful as i was.
