i bet mostly older guys check this out . at least at first. we remember the old wham o slingshot. they started the wham o company in a garage back in 1948 . their first product was a sling used to launch birds for training dogs. the interest was so strong they came up with the whamo slingshot, made from ash i think, very thick maybe 3/4 inch or more. had live rubber bands that were a good 3/4 inch wide and the most powerfull thing on the market. would easily kill squirrel or rabbit and no catbird was safe around a boy with one of these weapons. i think when i got mine around 1958 they cost about $1.50back in a day when gas was under $.25 a gallon you had to do some selling to get grandpa to spring for one. lol i remember wearing my canvase converse allstars and a sailors hat the day i got my first squirrel. by the end of the day we had four nice fat fox squirrel and gramma was so happy. she loved squirrel and grandpa had long since given up hunting them. i had never eaten it before. she cooked them up with gravey and corn bread and boiled new potato. i have yet to this day tasted anything as good as those four squirrel. may be that it was one of the last meals gramma cooked for us. or how proud my brother and i were of bringing something home she enjoyed so much. but it probably explains why i would rather hunt squirrel to this day then deer or anything else.

We were too poor to buy wham-o's, but we learned real fast how to make one. Took a few tries before we learned which trees were the best. Naturally, we started with popple because it worked so easily, but they just weren't strong enough. Tough part was the rubber, but old inner tubes served the purpose just fine. The birds surely took a beating while we were practicing. And yes, I remember the gas under a quarter per gallon. Remember the first time we went to the UP and had to pay almost $.30 for a gallon of gas. Outrageous to say the least.

Man are you guys old. The whamo sling shot was my first introduction in to hunting and the first weapon I killed a squirrel with. They also worked good for mothers to spank you with after getting caught shooting birds off the bird feeder. :yikes: Anyone that grew up using one of those babies knows the meaning of stealth hunting. Then came the wrist rocket, was like going from a pinto to a caddy. No longer have my whamo but still have the wrist rocket.

I had one of those, and it about took my eye out once when the tubing snapped.
Before that, I remember having a more traditional slingshot, and it could have been a Wham-O. I was more accurate with it than I ever was with the Wrist Rocket.
