Lol, I am supposed to be studying for a lab practicle right now (I take it in 8 hours), but this is obviously a better use of my time...
Just wanted to see if anyone else has seen this show and if you havent, I advise that you watch it emmediately. I think it has been airing for a little while now, but I just watched all the reruns last weeked. I dont know how long I have been saying "man, I would love to see a real survivor show, not that BS on OLN." Well, they have done it. This guy is the real deal, he really knows his stuff. They drop him off completely on his own in different parts of the world, real survival situations, and he has 7 days to stay alive and get out. To top it off he carries a TON of camera gear and films the whole show himself. I think they did 9 episodes this year, including Alasksa, somewhere in the arctic, lost at sea, a bayou somewhere... Basic survival skills have always been something that has interested me, and I have read a ton of books on it, it is very cool to see it actually being done. I do wish that they would do a longer episode. Instead of getting out in 7 days, he would be dropped off and have to live somewhere for like a month. I would like that for the aspect of building a semi permamnent shelter, stockpiling food, setting more traps, that kind of thing. He usually catches or finds a little food, but I want more!
Anyone seen it? What do you think?
Here is a link to the website http://www.survivorman.ca/.
Also if you have the science channel you can see it on friday night at 10:00 a full hour instead of a smaller 30 minute version played on the discovery channel.

At least you can use the information they give you if you are in need of it. Hopefully you never need it but it's good to know. :help:

I bought the DVD to use in my classroom and the kids love it! We read Hatchet, which takes place in the Canadian Wilderness, so we watched the episode that takes place in the Borea (?) forest. The DVD was $40 and has the first 10 episodes on it.

The Hatchet, a killer book, I read it when I was really young and then again in later years. There is a sequal too, read that. A good survival type book for kids is My Side of The Mountain. I read that as a child and absolutely loved it, there are a few sequals, read them too, but it starts to get a little far fetched.

I saw the Nunavut show last week, and it was awesome. I'm glad to see that Discovery wasn't afraid to show viewers that "Survivorman" might actually have to kill something in order to survive. And he found polar bear tracks 20 feet from his sled after sleeping!:yikes:
Hatchet, I have not read, but I read a few other Gary Paulsen, and I have read My Side of the Mountain, and The Far Side of the Mountain while I was in elementary school, and they both helped me get more involved in the outdoors. Any kid even remotely interested in hunting/fishing/survival should be encouraged to read stories like these.

Have watched the show many times. No doubt he is quite skilled at survival in many different situations. I would recommend anyone to watch it.

Hatchet is a very good story! I have used it with 4th, 5th, and 7th graders and they all love it!! Will they internalize the power of the outdoors because of it? I dont know.... What I do know is that the story at least gets them thinking about the outdoors, something that I foster as much as possible!!

Great show...watched several last weekend!
SAME SHOW...???...I'm not sure if it was the same show or a similar show, but I caught a show over the weekend where a guy built a shelter using a small dead tree that had fallen over. The tree was used as the main beam of his small stick shelter. During the night, he got freaked out when he heard "something big" walking around his camp, just outside the glow of the campfire. So he grabbed his gear and ran off in the middle of the night, without a flashlight. Later the next day he found a large grizzly track along a creek bed. It was a cool show as well, but I thought this guy had a camera crew following him.
Anyone see that show? And is it part of the series?
Thanks!

That was a different show. That guy had a camera crew following him .Suvivorman does his own filming. He is left alone to fend for himself .
I liked the one where he killed and cooked a ground squirrel out west. That sure did make me hungry.:tdo12:

I love how they show the hunting and cooking of animals. Most shows edit out all the good parts. The science channel plays it also, I can't get enough of good programs like this, even watching the reruns.
I've been hooked on it for a while. That guy is awesome. Discovery had some British guy on their "survivor" week that was kind of the same deal but with a camera crew. I don't think you can even compare the two, especially after seeing the behind the scenes/ how it's done episode of survivorman. Being alone and carrying all that equipment around must be horrible. You see some cool shots and then you have to realize that he needs to hike all the way back and get his camera. Plus he is literally putting his life on the line. If something happened to him he would probally die before they could find him. I especially loved the Costa Rica episode. I was there last year and really wanted to see what he could do there. That would be harder than anywhere else but the Arctic IMO. You can't appreciate how hot and humid it is and by far the scariest thing about that country is the ants. You can't get away from them and they really put a hurt on (read up on the bullet ant). I couldn't imagine staying a night on the forest floor there. The sound of the all bugs is deafining.
