I might join you guys. I will say one thing though, the only time I've had any real success out there has been LATE afternoon into the evening. Maybe I'll try to meet you guys for a few hours in the a.m. then come back for the "evening bite".

I think you mean West on 26 Mile Road, from Van Dyke.
I should be able to make Stoney on Sunday, as long as there is no as yet unknown family event.

I hit the grocery store. I'm bringing 16 hot dogs, 8 beef, 8 "other meat" . I'm bringing 12 Johnsonville Brats. 32 dog buns (enough for the dogs/brats I'm bringing, plus 4 extra). Sidebar - WHY DO THEY DO THAT, odd numbers of dogs to dog buns? end sidebar. Ketchup. Sorry guys and gals, I don't do mustard, so neither are you unless YOU bring it! hahaha.
My very kind and understanding wife is baking something - muffins and baked bread kinda thing - banana nut, pumpkin bread, I'm not sure what flavor, but it will be fresh, good, and warm when I get it, cold when you see it! Hahahaha again, but really it's yummy, either breakfast or lunch desert.
No plates or other non-manly stuff.
I'll have a single burner propane in the truck that can heat up a pan or something if needed. But I believe IFN is bringing a more suitable grill to flame the meats? Or Knockoff64 you'll have yours? We gotta smoke up a shanty and show off again, boy does that gather the hungry looks from the crowd! Get downwind of that, and I don't know how one can stand it, I'd have to EAT! I'm not sure which is better, actually eating, or the enticing smell of cooking on the ice! I'm not kidding, I can smell it already.

copied from Friday, 1/18/02:
Bait shop, 25 Mile Rd. at Mound, had bait as of Friday evening.
Bassmastergm, N.O., Tangleknot . . .
You guys are right, that store does have bait:
R & R Wine Shoppe
25 Mile Road at Mound, NE corner.
(810) 781-3174
They open at
9:00 am Saturday
12:00 Sunday
I met Bob this evening, the bait supplier at the store. He just got a fresh catch of locally acquired swimmers - lots of
minnows, and pike bait. Hey, if you buy the big one he's got, we're eating him if he doesn't get eaten by a pike first!
He's got waxies, mousies, and spikes too. No wigglers. There's some other misc. supplies too, I.E. a few plastic minnow
buckets with flip lid for about 2 bucks, skimmers, etc.
He's an icefisherman, looking to have a supply of bait like the rest of us.
I told him about this site - Hi Bob if you cruise by! The store owners said I was not the first person in there that evening
talking about Lakeville Saturday, and Stoney on Sunday - that was you they were talking about Tangleknot?
Of course, the store is also a party store, pizza, deli, lotto, imported liquor and beer, wine.
For those not from the local area, it's very near Stoney Creek Metro Park, 1 mile south, and about 2 miles east.
25 Mile Road does now cross Rochester Road and is paved. At Rochester Road, it's called Tienken road.
R & R Wine Shoppe would be about 5-6 miles east.
That's my report, and I'm still . .

Well, I was at Lakeville today with my wife "Tangleknot". Had a nice time with everyone from the site. I had told you guys that since my wife is Tangleknot, it would only make sense that I would be "AFraidKnot". But, in my constant quest for geese, duck, deer, salmon, steelhead and of course, dipping it in the ice hole  I forgot that I had already registered for the site as "Chromium". (My true love)
I will be at Stoney tomorrow, but as Chromium. I will bring something.
I closing I feel I should say this: Did we catch any fish today?? AFraidKnot! :D But there's always tomorrow.........

Well I'm in, at least for several hours in the morning. I am bringing my brother in law and another friend. Northern Outdoorsman, it's your old Buddy Dave Glen. Northern are you bringing your shanty. Dave said something about "is it going to be cold out there :)" Anyways, looking forward to seeing some old faces again and meeting new ones. The guys I am bringing haven't fished much so take it easy on them :) I am just hoping we can get them into some fish. If anyone is picking up bait in the morning and can get an extra dozen crappie or perch minnows and one container of waxworms I will pay you back for them. I didn't get a chance to get to a bait shop and looks like they don't open tomorrow until late.
Thanks

It was nice meeting some new faces today. Sorry don't remember all the names though. We had some other things going on today so had to take off early (missed the cookout) and unfortunately didn't meet everyone out there. Ice Fishing Nut, thanks for picking up those minnows and waxies for me. I hope you had enough buns to go around. Joes Cat, thanks for drilling our holes with your powered auger and for the great baked goods this morning. Please tell your wife that we thouroughly enjoyed them. Those cinnamon muffins ROCK!! Walleye Mike, thanks for showing my brother in law and my friend your camera set up. They thought that it was pretty awesome. That was Dave's first time ice fishing and he really enjoyed it and wants to definately go again. Hey and that was after 4 hours, no fish, and only 1 bite a piece between the 3 of us. Hope after we left that you guys ran into the fish. Maybe we were the bad luck factor. Every time I take my brother in law with me we catch squat. Anyway, until next time.
The ice was a good solid 7-8" (measured)
Oh, yeah, Don, sorry about your computer. Hope you get it back up and running. Dave missed seeing you and we were going to stop by your place on the way home but you weren't there. Oh well we will get together sometime.

However a few decent keepers were mixed in, one or so for each person after lunch.
A nice Walleye was lost right at the hole, I can't recall by whom.

Don, We fished up by the dam for the middle lake. We spread out in the beginning all over the east arm towards the dam, but all ended up about 1/2 way between the beach and the dam.
We really had plenty of food, just had to pull your chain!
Creek Chub, I left about 3:30, Joe's Cat, his daughter, and Jpollman were still there. I'm not sure when they left, Joe's daughter is quite the diehard, and Jpollman just arrived, so I think he stayed a while.
By the way, I forgot to thank Joe's wife for the great banana and pumpkin bread!:)

Hey everyone, nice fishin'g with you again, and the couple of new faces too!
Yep, Dead Bird scored the largest perch of the day - the largest perch I've ever seen come outta Stoney in all my years ice fishing that lake (eh hem, that would be about .9 years, Yes, that's "point nine") ! Still, I've kept perch smaller than that outta Simcoe (Couchiching) lake. Now we know all the little pike baiters we were catching have parents, or BIG brothers and sisters.
IFN and Knockoff, thanks again for bringing your grills, and doing a mighty fine job grilling up the eats. Very fine job, gourmet caliber.
Walleye Mike, the venison burgers are the whip!
Hey Creekchub, where were you fishing at? I guess you don't have an FRS radio - that would have been nice to hear from you, maybe swing by and say hi!
Don, I'm sorry you couldn't make it, and double sorry about your computer. But at least you're getting it working again. But if not, bring it on out. We'll remove some slot covers and drive bay covers, and turn it into structure. GPS it, and it will be the Michigan-Sportsman honey hole. :p
My daughter and I, and jpollman left about 5pm or so. The dink perch started to turn on even for me before that, I was catching the little buggers pretty steady for a while there. I shoulda tagged one though, since I swear it was the same one each time! They were little, and had a real light bite.
So just remember Dead Bird, the next jumbo you catch outta there, I'm sure one of us has already caught it already! I think that's why the jumbo are so scarce - they've already learned our tricks when they were little. Maybe if we read back a few years in all the messages, we'd see that years ago, it was all dink perch then, they grew up, and are now smart, alive, jumbo's swimming around. :D
Another fine day fishing, regardless of the fish. Great company, chats, eats, and a little windy but beautiful day to be out.

WOW Deadbird. That is one awesome perch. Largest I have ever seen come out of Stoney Creek. I was beginning to wonder if anything worth fishing for existed in there. Glad someone got into some fish. Again congrats. Any other decent bites in the same area? If you wouldn't mind could you email or PM me with a basic description of the area (I don't have GPS so co-ordinates won't help me) where you caught that one. I have been chasing around that lake all winter trying to find some decent fish and haven't had any luck yet.
Thanks and congratulations again

Oh my God!!!!!!!:( :( :(
I have been getting pm's of complaints from quite a few people, at least 5..... concerning my posting the GPS numbers for Deadbirds big perch..... I formally apologise(sp?) to all that I may have offended, and want to go on record as saying that I will never even mention Global Positioning Systems again!!!!!!
What strikes me as funny though is that the person that should technically have dibs to that spot, Deadbird, has'nt said anything!!!!!! So, big guy, if I was wrong,,,,,, I'm sorry.
From now on, I will restrain myself from giving too
detailed accounts of the goings on of any fishing or hunting trip that I might be a part of!!!!!

01-23-2002, 12:11 PM
How accurate is a GPS 75?100? feet. So what if you gave the numbers, if anyone goes there, they'll only "be close". Keep up with the info.
You wouldn't believe the info ESOX gave me with one simple question. I know exactly what spot he was standing, how he fished, which direction he casted, and advice on how to do better then him.
A true sportsmen!
jnpcook

Ice Fishing Nut:
I wouldn't worry about giving the co-ordinates too much. As Jimbos43 said the GPS will get you close. I don't think you would get to the exact same spot drilling your hole though and even if you did, there is no guarantee the fish would still be there. And I am sure after Deadbird got that dandy perch, he jigged in that hole for quite a while trying to stir up some action for some more jumbos. I didn't see a mess of jumbos in the bucket (no offense Deadbird). I don't think by giving those co-ordinates that the perch population in Stoney Creek Lake will be harmed. (And NO, I don't even own a GPS). There may be some people with GPS systems that may congregate on this spot but I would doubt that it would be any more than normal.
There is always the PM and email though so those truly interested can still get the information. But what is the difference if everyone sends you a PM or email requesting this info or if it is posted? Just a thought.

May complaint is that there are alot of people that visit this site and don't register. The fishing at Stoney the last few years has been terrible. Now if 50 people see where the "BIG Perch" was caught, and 10 of them manage to get 20 a piece, then the fishing can only get worse....Just my 2 cents....
jpollman
01-23-2002, 07:38 PM
GPS coordinates.
IFN, I'm with jnpcook on this one. Don't sweat it.
Personally I don't think it is any big deal. What is the difference ?
Like John said, I HIGHLY doubt that a bunch of people are going to go out to that EXACT spot and clean out all the JUMBOS.
Actually, I'm probably going to stop wasting my time at Stoney for the most part. The ONLY luck I've had at that lake has been one or two trips out there last winter. I fished it a number of times ALL SUMMER LONG and didn't catch a thing ! All I've gotten there this year has a few (very few) DINK perch.
I think I might hit it now and then because it's close and convenient but I'm going to start looking for other better producing lakes to try.
Dead Bird

I can tell you guys are missing the ice allready. Guys, how many times when fishing do you meet someone because you are catching fish as they either park there boat or spud a hole next to you. The lake holds some big fish as does most lakes, I happened to be lucky enough to catch one.
Don, if I would have given out the GPS coordinate for the perch we caught on LSC people would have thought I was nuts. Remember the fish in the 6 in of water, remember how quickly we had company.
We fish for perch because we like to catch them, share stories with other fisherman, and eat or fish. That is why we are not fly fisherman.
Folks remeber I only keep 7 fish for that day of fishing. I caught them in 9 different locations. I kept aprox. 1 out ever 9 fish caught that day.
Granted this perch was a good size but no state record was ever in jeopardy.... Guys... it was just a fish that tasted good...
northern_outdoorsman
01-23-2002, 10:46 PM
ok...I guess it is no big deal...who wants the Perch to grow big in Stoney Creek lake anyway....
Bassmastergm
01-24-2002, 07:08 AM
I think that being a sportsperson, it is not wrong to let other people know where you are catching fish. Think of this, we were all young at one time and what if our parents or grandparents never taught us how to catch fish or find them because they were afraid that we might catch more than them. Where would we be now if we were not taught these valuable lessons, probably sitting in front of the TV. I feel that if we can help another angler get started into fishing by giving them the locations they will in turn give us information in the future that possibly we did not know about.
northern_outdoorsman
01-25-2002, 12:18 PM
BassMastergm...you are right...and so was everyone else. Ya, I was wrong for getting Upset. I should have just stated this..." PLEASE Know the body of water you are fishing, and if a certain specics is not abundant, or Jumbo's aren't abuntdant, please throw back the Larger Ones and keep some of the smaller ones to eat"...How's that sound?
