I am ready to paint my boat it is an aluminum 18' starcraft with old worn out peeling paint. I believe you have to prime any bare metal with a zinc primer. I have access to a heated shop to park the boat for a few days to allow the paint to cure at a controlled temperature. I only want to brush and roll since I have no access to a sprayer. Just wondering where to buy and what brand to buy? Also is there one brand that allows less of a prep job then another? Any advice on how to, or what to use, or where to get basically would be appreciated. Do you have to sand down first or is a good washing all that is needed? Thanks!

I am in the same situation. I have a green jon boat that I am looking to keep a similiar color with the flat green paint. What is the most durable paint to use for this and the prep work? any help is greatful!

I would sand all loose paint and feather the edges. Wipe down the whole area to be painted with white vinegar. The vinegar will clean the aluminum of all oil or impurities. Good ole Rustoleum paint or other high quality Oil based paint will do a fine job.:)

Painted mine with rustolem....Turned out fine!!! I used a gun on mine though.
I have heard of people brushing/rolling it on too...I believe that you have to thin it about 10% or so, this will help hide the brush/roller strokes.

Did you have any bare metal spots to go over? If you primed them what did you use for a primer? I read somewhere that paint does not naturally stick to aluminum so you have to use a special primer. Just wondering if this is correct info.

I have seen Rust-Oleum Aluminum primer at ACE hardware. Per the Rust-Oleum website, it is part number 8781.
