Anyone have any info on the inland lakes around tawas? I might be heading up to Hale and was wondering what ice conditions are like around there.

Heading to Tawas to take a look at it tomorrow a.m. I've heard the inner bay has good ice and there are permanent shacks out there. Will give a report tomorrow night.

Business plans changed and I never made it to Tawas. I did here from a buddy who was passing through Tawas and he said ther were some people out fishing with quads. I will be heading there for sure Sat. a.m. to see what the day brings.

Fished Tawas Bay today. At least 100 people out, probably more. 9" or 10" of ice on the inner bay. Deeper water had about 7" or 8". Couldn't beleive it, I was fishig in about 18 ft of water and here comes a Toyota pickup truck. If his brains were as big as his balls, we'd call him Einstien. I caught 1 perch and 1 pike and then moved out to 21 ft. I should have made that move earlier. In 21 ft of water I caught 2 more pike and 13 perch. Several other fish that got away. Smallest perch was 9" and biggest was a whopping 13", a real fatty.
I'm going back tomorrow rigged for perch fishing. Today I was fishing for walleye, but caught none.

Nice job Magnet,
Big John the fish slayer, let us know tomorrow how you make out and stay away from the trucks out there. That doesn't mean that you can take the big F150 on the ice lol. Good luck and keep in touch.

Magnet, good job. I've been wanting to get up there but it's an awful long haul to 21' w/out a quad or snow-machine. Did you walk? Were you on any weeds also? Have done really well on TB in the past in those tiny weed beds. Thanks..BG

Tawas Bay 1/20 - Fished by the same holes as yesterday in 21 ft of water. Caught 18 perch. More than half were caught on minnows and the rest on wax worms. Biggest was 12 1/2". Also got a 12". The rest were around 10". Smallest being 8". Didn't have an evening run like yesterday. The wind switched and the fish quit biting. Through back 2 big pike. Had another up to the hole 3 times before he sawed through my flourocarb. It was probably pushing 3 ft long. Catching those big perch reminded me of being at Simco. When I got there about 11:00am, I talked to a couple of guys that had just come in and they had 3 perch from 17 ft of water.
No weeds where I was sitting. Weeds were about 30 to 40 ft away.

bloo_gilz,
We had quads, but there were a few guys that had walked out. I'm not sure how far we were from where everybody was parking (by Jerry's). Probably about a mile.

MAGNET,
have you ever fished the reef inside the bay in the winter? Caught some nice eyes over it in the summer, but never fished it in the winter. What's it like. Thanks

Uncle Al,
We have never fished the reef, although we have often talked about it. There always seems to be too many people there and we don't really want to compete for a spot. There are other places in the bay that can also be productive without having to fight the crowd.

I was at Tawas bay today 1/27/02 at about 12:00noon. There were lots of people out fishing. Several permanant shanties and ATV's on the ice. Actually saw a couple of small trucks out there. Talked to a guy coming off the ice speared a 36" pike from his shanty. He said there is about 8" of ice...said the top two or three didn't look real good. Did tell me about the guy who fell through last week. Said there was a ship that cut across from the coast guard station and it froze over a little. Couple of days later a guy tried to cross it and fell through and drowned. You have to be so careful, especially when you are not familiar with an area.

Whew.....glad to hear there's still ice. Heading up on the 8th, 9th and 10th, and these 50 degree days had me worried (if the wind blew a little that is). Glad to hear it's still there.....this next cold snap should sure it up.

I was useing a pink glow flyer trying to get a walleye to bite. I marked all kinds of fish but they weren't very agressive.
