View Full Version : First Animal Harvested

What was your first harvest? Mine was a red squirrel with my bow. My dad's friend bet me a dollar that I couldn't hit it. I did, and got a dollar :D . So, what was yours?
After my parents refused to get me some new arrows, I took the fiberglass flag off my bike and cut it down to make some homemade fletchingless ones. I had a little red bear recurve and sat on the deck and waited for the first chipmonk to come out and feed on the dropped seeds. I nailed him with the first arrow and immediately yelled to my brother to come see my first take. I can't remember how old I was, but I'm guessing around 10-12.
After reading all the other posts, regarding "legal" takes, I need to re-post. My first legal take was way later in life. I never shot to kill anything until I was 32. I took up deer hunting at the age of 29 and took my first deer at the age of 32. It was a 7pt. 5X2. I passed on him the previous year when he was just a 3X1. I thought he was a 4X1 when I actually took him. 20yrds with a bow from the ground. I've yet to take anything from a tree stand, all takes have been ground shots.

legal was either a bunny or a hen can...and I don't remember which came first.
But, I might have done some sniping before I was old enough to get a license...I dunno, it was awhile back ya know....

When I was 13, my parents took me to my aunt and uncles place on Torch Lake. I snuck my stepdad's red rider bb gun into the back of the car. The next morning we got a couple sparrows. My aunt told my stepdad and he smashed the gun up against a big oak tree in the front lawn. He was not happy that I was killing birds illegally.
The first legally harvested animal was a 6 point buck!:woohoo1:
Another for sparrows with red ryder... Legally was a deer.

If you don't count varmints and the little birds that fell to pellet guns when I was very young, my first one was a Turkey in the Spring 2005 season.
with a Sheridan Blue Streak pellet gun

Nothing illegal about shooting sparrows. Lots of fun for a kid and a service to the world.

Like others, I shot sparrows with my BB gun, but my first real game was a rooster pheasant. Probably 13, I don't think I culd hit anything the first year I went.

I have never actually shot a sparrow, i was more of a blue jay type person. Mainly because they were annoying. First game animal was a pronghorn 4 years ago when i was 12.

A big Rooster Pheasant. We actually had Pheasant's then. In fact, I remember the opening day of Pheasant season was as popular in my area then as opening day of firearms Deer season. Lot's of us took the day off from school.

I made my first shot at about 4 yrs old on a 180 pounder. Took it right up side the head. I was using a double barrel.
The recoil was what got me.............
My dad didn't figure that I could get the strings off of those corks !
Well I got my first lesson at what NOT to shoot at!
As the story goes, my mom argued with my dad over the corks and won. I lost the corks
But.....:D from what my dad said, it didn't take me long to find out that pencils worked better than corks.
Ture story!

Like many others .... sparrows with a BB gun. Also, plinking turtles off logs in the Muskegon River where I grew up (not proud of it, but boy was it fun). Game animals would have been a rabbit first, then pheasants around 12 yrs old.

I shot stuff with BB guns as well but my first licensed animal was a 27 pound raccoon I trapped when I was 12 or 13. That sucker looked like a 100 pounder in my eyes and I had to carry it 4 miles home crammed in my pack.

My first kill was a racoon with a bow. It was sitting in the back of the garage foaming at the mouth. The first shot went through the back wall but the second shot was dead on. I still cant forget how bad i felt when he grabbed ahold of the arrow sticking out of him.:(

In just about every reply I read, all of us began shooting tweetys with b.b. rifles when we were younger. So cool! My first with the 10 pump B.B. gun was a Purple Grackle. Got him right in his yellow eye. Best place to aim! My first legal kill was a woodcock on the fly when I was 12 yrs. old. After I had shot it, my uncle asked me in a somewhat stern voice if I realized what I just did. I was scared as I thought I did something wrong! He said,"You just shot one of the hardest game birds to hit on the fly!"With that he gave me a big smile and a congratulatory pat on the back. It was awesome! They never got easier to hit, I just got more consistent.

Believe it or not when I was about 8 or 9 years old....
I caught a rabbit in a milkcrate trap. Proped it up with a stick and string, baited it with some carrots mom gave me. Put it out in the yard, ran the string back thru a window in the garage and sat there for the better part of the afternoon. Yes, I watched way to much Bugs Bunny/Road Runner and Little Rascals when I was a kid!
Another one for the sparrow/starling with the Daisy BB gun. The first 'real' kill was a squirrel with shotgun. John-Ypsi

I remember being such a dork that i took the time to solder two BB's together because I thought they would out perform the pellets out of my crossman. even worse I encouraged myself by killing a fox squirrel in my back yard. then i tried to tan the hide. i hope my kids do stupid crap like that.
