I stopped by Gander Mountain in Grandville today to pick up some #2 barrel swivels... that's all I wanted. I go to the pin holding the swivels and the first bag only has one damn swivel in it!! Supposed to be 3. The next bag back... empty... next one... empty...and so on.... of the 4 bags on the pin there was only ONE DAMN swivel!!! I grabbed the bags up and took them to the fishing counter (my buddy Rich was working the counter today) and he says it happens all the time. This really pisses me off. Shoplifters beware... If I catch you.... ooooohhhh... you don't want me to catch you!!! I ended up with #3 swivels instead.
Anyway.... I'm off to the river... with swivels I had to settle for.
Went to a small tackle shop in Gulf Shores Ala. Couldn't find any stainless ball bearing swivels anywhere. I asked at the counter, they had them, behind the counter! Seems they were a very popular item for the thieves thereabouts. Crooks suck.

Makes you kind of wonder how the hell a sportsman would sink so low as to steal tackle, as cheap at those small items are...

You would be amazed at what people will take from stores. Where I work people take the Tension knobs off the bait casters all the time.Steal hooks and anything else that is small and they can get in there pockets.

Gander now carries the Lucky Craft brand crank baits.... these are kept behind the fishing counter... at $15-20 a crack I can see why they really don't want these stolen!

Or maybe they are trying to keep them behind the counter so that no one can buy them, and the employees think if they keep them back there they will discontinued them and then they could pick them up cheap.lol:lol:

Thats the big problem in society today, allot of people think they are owed something, it may be a snap swivel or nut and washer or health care or $30 an hour. Heres a novel idea HOW ABOUT THEY LEARN TO WORK FOR IT, 90 days in jail for shop lifting would be a good teacher, promptly followed by a good caning!

It happens, and it's a shame. I know one oldtimer that runs a bait shop, that only has one item each on display. The reason being, he can see right off when something is missing. He has more of everything if you request it. It's a sad situation.

We could learn a lot from the Iraqiis, Chop off a finger for the first incedent, a hand for the second, repeat the process for following offenses, after about 4 thefts, they wouldn't be able to "pocket anything"! Oh yeah one more condition, after the 1st offense they must forfeit any future claims to welfare/social security so we don't have to support them!

Can't believe what so called fisherman do. I agree with some stiff community service for anyone caught. I would find a highway with a lot of trash on the sides and tell them to have at it.

I hear yah. Whenever I go in to get some replacment and need to match an existing nut or washer I always toss it up in the air a few times when walking in the store so they get on camera coming in with one. It's hard to believe someone will shop lift a $.15 item, but have not problem littering a 6 pack of returnables.

Purchased 1000 yards of line a few years ago, returned home, open the box and there was less then 100 yards left on the spool.  Looks like some bozo filled all his reels and returned the almost empty spool back in the box to the store. I now open the box and check the spool before I pay for it.

I'm assuming you work there, common practice. Never worked there. I know some who do. They have some secret stashes they been sitting on for years.

The whole put it behind the counter thing to me might have to do more with a limited supply. I had buddies work in retail stores and in some cases on an item that was a hot item or just limited have stashed the item behind the counter or just left in the back room and tell you that they dont have anymore and purchse the item themselves with their employee discount ;) . To me thats along the same line as stealing (just the other way around)especially when theres 22 in stock theres 20 guys in line and yep you guest it im the twenty first and the cashier :evilsmile tells me "IM SORRY WHERE ALL SOLD OUT" :yikes: . MAN THAT $H*T PISS'S ME OFF!!! Oooops sorry bout that guys getting alittle carried away, had to get it out.

Although it doesnt make it right, I think people steal stuff like that because of lack of avalibility. If there was one that they could buy in the store then they might buy it, but when they want to fishing that weekend they probably steal it rather than place a lenthy and often expensive order with the manufacturer.
I agree with all of you guys. I tried shop lifting as a kid once (a small toy or something) and couldnt do it, as I walked toward the front of the store I felt so sick that I just turned around and put it back. I guess some people just dont have a conscience. I hate to admit it, but I know people who are borderline kleptomaniacs, they steal for fun, they dont even need most of the stuff they take. I wonder how much stuff a major super store marks off as stolen every year. Kinda like planting 10% more cuz you know the birds are gonna eat some. They have to buy 10% more cuz they know the dirt bags are gonna steal some .

I have seen half empty packs of hooks, 3-way swivels, barrel swivels, split shot and you could name anything that comes in a little pack. It is not a lack of availability since there are plenty on the hook, it is sheer greed. As to the knobs on reels, the nuts, pins, bolts or whatever, I really doubt that it is lack of availability. The same store that finds the parts missing from the reels can also have a compartment box filled with all these parts sitting right next to the reel display. Greed, it is greed and laziness.

the GM by my parents in IN started selling higher-end acrylic duck and goose calls about 2yrs ago. (calls go for 75-150$ a pop)
anyway -- when they got their first ones in they had them sitting out w/ all the other calls. for those non-waterfowlers - the higher end calls usually just come in a small 2 piece box that is not sealed shut (kinda like a rapala box). VERY easy to swipe. Anyway - was back 2 days later and they were all under lock and key. I asked the guy there and he said they already had like 10 or 11 stolen.

and find a judge that would require them to wear a sign that read " I am a thief" while they picked up trash....Thieves and liars p**s me off to no end....

my father works in retail (grocery) in Tennessee. anyhow, when they catch someone stealing, they just get the product back, if possible, and let them go. he says it costs too much money to prosecute for it, so they just let them go and don't even get involved.
not my fathers idea, trust me. i was caught when i was 9 yrs old with a pack of water balloons by MY FATHER.....my rear-end is still sore today!!!!!!!! plus, HE made me sweep the whole floor, of the store he managed, by myself on saturdays for 2 months. when his fellow employees asked why i am there, i had to tell them why. that was probably the most influentual punishment i ever got as a kid. to this day, 27 years later mind you, one of the guys that worked there with my father processes my deer for me and ALWAYS brings it up when i see him. a very lasting punishment!!!!!!:tsk:

Another thing to look out for is sometimes people take the superline out of its box and swap it with regular fishing line, and buy the box of regular mono with superline inside it.
The oddest thing I saw some one steal from a fishing store was a teenage girl gnawing through a length of 60# mono. That has got to hurt the teeth, I only tried to bit through 20# XT one time.

I work in retail for a store in GR and we are more of a grocery store setup. It is amazing the amount of products that people will take, open, and eat and than just leave the package in the isle somewhere.
The other thing is price tag swapping. They will take a tag that is much lower than what it is supposed to be and than they take it thru the register and try to get it for that price or I have even had some that have the nerve to try and get us for the Michigan scan law.
And please I hope that any deviants that read this, do not come to my store and try these tricks. If you do I will catch you and unlike other places I WILL prosecute to the full extent the law allows.
Sorry for the rant folks but that is a touchy subject with me.

The title of this thread is all wrong.......
It should have read "Theives Screwing Sportsman"! These people should not be compared to nor even reffered to as "sportsman"! :tsk: :Protest_e Thieves in the end cause us all to pay more in the end!
Liars on the other hand, well they're just fishermen that stretch the truth a little bit!
