Hey all! I am a rookie bow hunter haven't been out in about 5 years. I had an old Bear bow stripped down and used fingers as release. My question is now that I have my tax return I'm looking to buy something new and easy to use/tune. I plan on using sights and release this time. Can you point me in the direction of a decent bow to start my search? :help:

The best advice that I recieved when looking for a new bow was to shoot as many different types of bows as you can. I shot about 30 different bows before I narrowed it down to 3. Then I had a hard time choosing between a Hoyt and Darton. I ended up getting the Hoyt becouse it had a 8 3/4" brace height with my draw length which made it very forgiving. It also was in between a short bow and long one. The darton was a sweet shooter and I busted 3 nocks at 15 yards at the archery range while testing it with no sites. This kept me going back and tring it out a few more times.
The other thing I did was stand close to the target draw back the bow and shoot with your eyes closed and pay close attention to the feel and sound of the bow when you draw back and release.
If you want to buy one bow to last you a long time then go out and shoot alot of bows in all price ranges. This will help you make a desicion that you will be confident in and then you wont be tempted to buy a new bow every year. Unless of course you want to.
Start with the top 3, Hoyt, Mathews, and Bowtech and then look at Darton, Parker, PSE, and what ever other bows you can get your hands on to shoot. It also depends on what price range your in. Dont forget you will want Carbon arrows and need to set the bow up with sites and rest and you want a new release aid too. $$$$$$$$$$
Also There are alot of great used bows out there for sale on Archery TAlk.com and Ebay. But wait until you have tried them or something similiear out before you buy. I would also stay away from most package deals since the components are usually cheaply made. Unless of course its a used bow that is set up.

Chuck gave you some great advice. One thing I'd add is to stay with a reputable pro shop. The retail stores may seem to be a better deal at timesw, but you can't beat the customer service you'll get with a pro shop!!;)

Do yourself a favor ..... shoot one of the new hoyts. I shot the trykon and the xl , saturday at Schupbachs, in Jackson. Brian knows his stuff and he will steer you in the right direction. He has all the bows. But if you don't mind spending the money...... the trykon xl is awesome. There is virtually zero hand shock and it's fast. As soon as I can sell my cyber tec I'm buying the xl.

Since you're in Westland, Hogwild would be my 1st choice. Check their hours before going down. Van's is very good, too. If you can make it up to Walled Lake, I've heard a lot of good things about Cast & Blast. If you can hit all 3, you will have had the chance to handle most of the top of the line bows out there today.
One thing about Van's is that they are a Matthews dealer so they will push a Matthews on you, plus the most expensive arrows, release, sights, etc....
I went there one time and won't ever go back there again.
I prefer 4 Seasons in Ann Arbor.
