I am purchasing a new Electric for my 16ft boat. My 5hp is ready to crap out. My question is should I also buy a new battery just for trolling. The main motor (electric start) along with a fishfinder are hooked up to the battery right now. I don't want to end up with a dead battery in the river. (NO Alternator) Is this too much for one battery. Anyone else run this type of set-up in their boat. See ya all on the river real soon.

Most definitely yes. Your big motor battery is most likely just a starting battery. You need a deep cycle battery or dual-purpose.

spend the extra 20 bucks and buy an absorbtion glass mat (agm) battery (about 100 dollars). you will thank me in 5 years when the battery still holds a full charge.they are much more stable , will not spill and stand vibration much better .
they also can stand twice the charge-discharge cycles of a flooded cell. think golf cart battery for a cheaper alternative to a marine agm.think optima for an expensive agm.
