I have a trip planned for this summer. Made reservations for 5 nights at each one,in the first part of August. I haven't been to either park and was wondering what to exspect. Every year we(the family) try to go to a couple new State Parks. So far in the past few years we've been to 5 in the U.P. and 10 in the L.P. I know theres alot of state parks but I'd like stay at each one.Any info is greatly appreciated.

I stayed at Hoeft(spelling? It was in Rogers City)) last August for 3 nights. Keep in mind I am a tent camper so I really was not to happy with it. Not much of a "woodsy" setting, sites are really jam packed close together.
It gets pretty cool at night even in August. Basically not much to do around there but walk the beach and take a tour of the old lighthouse, of course if your into Salmon fishing you do have the lake there but a launch is quite a drive from the park.
Good Luck. P.s. if you have not stayed at Rifle River State Rec Area yet, I strongly recomend doing so, Huge park with lots to do there.

Straits State Park is a fine park.
The rocky beach offers a great view of the bridge.
We stayed there about 4 years ago, so memory is foggy, but I think the bathrooms were very clean, sites were generally large with plenty of trees.
I remember there were a fair number of campers staying for one night (rolling in late at night and leaving at first light -- headed for further north). You are close to quite a few things at Straits -- all the Mackinaw stuff of course -- but you can easily take a long day trip to Tahquamenon Falls, the Soo, and Whitefish Point. The hiking trail at Straits is fine and dandy too. If you want a little more hiking and more rocky beaches, head across the bridge to Wilderness State Park. Stop by Emmet County's Headlands property on your way into Wilderness if you need more trails and beach action without the crowds.
Have a great trip!

My family went their a few years back and had a great time. Great campground but I would suggest staying in the lower campgroung a lot more wooded and near the water. To see the bridge at night is something to behold. Only down part to the campground is the lack of beach but other than that had a wonderful time. While your up their be sure to visit oswalds bear ranch in newberry.

I grew up in Rogers City and Hoeft was just down the way from my house. It is true that the nights can get cold because of the lake. As for the first part of Aug. you may find it hard to get in because that is Nautical Festival time in Rogers. Also the salmon fishing is starting its full swing. I did read last year that the park was rated in the top 10 state parks in Michigan. Also there is alot to do if you know who to ask and What you are intrested in.
