Looking forward to chasing stream browns & rainbows this year. Reflecting on a good year last year and thinking about adding some new tricks to my arsenal. I've got plenty of inline spinners, spoons & cranks and some confidence using them. I'm looking for a couple new tricks for those fish I've hooked so many times they know me by name. By the time the season progresses, my stream browns have grown wise to my confidence lures.

I read an article on using ice & panfish jigs under a float. I was thinking about 4 pound test main line with a fluorocarbon leader under a clear Drennan float and some smaller ice jigs (ie. like a fat renke) maybe tipped with a waxworm. BTW: the creeks I like to fish are smaller and run pretty clear so stealth usually helps.

Does anyone have experience with this style of trout fishing or have any recommendations or different ideas. Or, if you have used this style, can you recommend some jig types & colors. Thanks a bunch!

Russ

I'e had luck this year, during the warm spell, on hot pink or yellow teardrops with a t-boned waxie. A more natural color black/white may work in cleared water.

What sizes? 6 or 8?

I've used lead heads with a worm or salted minnow for stream trout and that way you dont even need any splitshot. i used pink and chart. and had good success

Thanks guys. I can't wait for the season opener. Wading small creeks for browns is probably my first love in fishing. Those browns get pretty wary after you have stuck them a couple times.

Also, last year when the dog days hit and they got lock jaw I was able to wake them up with some Berkley micro trout worms on a small hook with fluorocarbon leader and a clear float. I can see the ice jigs working.

I might start window shoping for some other soft plastics in the micro line.

Thanks again,
Russ

I was using a size 10, but I'm sure you could use larger sizes. Good luck!!

I've use several different types of tear-drop ice fishing hooks of various colors...some tipped with wigglers or wax worms. Some bare...I've had decent success with those.....The one surprize I had was, I use a purple rubber bass-stopper worm tipped with a piece of orange yarn tied to the bottom hook. I caught quite a few browns when no-one else was....I tried it for the heck of it too....You never know until you try it I guess....

One of my favorite ways to trout fish.... works on steelies too. One day this summer we will have to fish and compare notes.
