Well, yesterday was a complete blue-bird day out, so I left Bay City around noon, and hit the river. I started at the dam, missed a fish there, it hit agressivley, but only grabbed the bag, and didn't get the hook. There were two fresh blood spots there. I hit a couple other spots, all I got was a tree branch-wrapped stealth float:rolleyes: . Well, I figured the sun's been warming the water all day, so the mouth should be clear, and fishable, and it was about that time to start prospecting. To get to the point, I hit three right before dark in the rocks, a smallish buck plunking, and two chrome hens drifting bags, chokers. The buck was around 5lbs, and the hens were 7-8. So that is a very welcome sign. There was one other guy at the mouth, an old guy I've never seen, he landed one, around 6lbs. He said they've been getting some here and there the last-few week's out there. I wanted to hit singin', but there was too much ice blown in, though the ditch is wide open, save for some flow ice. The Au Sable was low, and had shelf ice in spots. They didn't get any snow up there(Bay City got 11" thurs.!), so the access's are pretty manageable.

You will have to give us a better idea about where you want to go!

I am sure he is refering to Foote Pond. A lot of people beleive it is pointless to go until all the ice has melted, thus indicating the fish will start bedding as it is a good indicator of water temps. Of course those fishing the holes know better! This rain and warm up should = go time. AusableSteel- were you given any crap when you went to the rock pile? I heard rumors they were going to close fishing off there due there to compalints and idiots leaving garbage out there. Also- unless you want 50 people out there, just PM me when it is really on and don't post for all to see LOL. God I love that spot when it is on.

Dude just saying I was in the rocks out at the mouth isn't giving a whole lot away! There's rocks from just past the launch all the way out to the South pier. I could have been anywhere, there's alot of good spots out there, but any one place could produce. I've seen them caught all up and down the rocks out there. Also, there's already way too many people, nothing on that rivers a seceret, well......;). As far as the ice on the ponds, keep it on so the fish stay off the beds:D !!!!!!!!!!!

There actually IS an Ausable Lake - it is East of Rose City, near Lupton. Foote dam pond is probably the lake which was being inquired about. It is usually frozen until well into April, but with the warmer than usual Winter, who knows?
Bunyan Town has been for sale a bunch of times over the last 10 years or so. I think it actually changed hands once, but last I knew it had been for sale for about a year.
It is a lot easier to fight and stand a chance to land a fish when you are
"on the rocks" at the South pier - just because you can steer the fish around the rocks in the water a lot easier. It is always cool to see a lot of people fishing, and see waves of fish come up the river - because you progressively see people hooking fish in an upstream pattern. There is a particular spot (which is not a secret, but I ain't telling here) to be when that is happening. I've had some pretty crazy days hitting lake-fresh chromers there.

Nice fishing, AS. Putting in your time does pay off, eh? Choke bags, who would have thought?

Last spring I saw a "For Sale" sign on Bunyan Town.Did it sell? Its alway's for sale! Been seeing it in the real estate guides up that way for at least two years.......

Cant understand it either, if the fishing always as good as they say it is why someone hasnt snapped up that place is beyond me! Must be the asking price is maybe a little to high?

Did not mean to sound like I was giving you crap, keep up the posts. If anyone wants to call up there for a more accurate report, I suggest Welmans.

Just like alot of other businesses in the "north" country, Bunyan Town is in an older structure which happens to need alot of updates unseen by your average customer. However, value is in the eye of the beholder. Take a look at Charbbanues (SP?) Restaurant just upstream, what a booming place that could be in season if it was bought by the right people.

Whatever you do, do not eat there. I agree, if someone put some cash into it, and if there was an actual customer base available, it could be a gold mine, but after I took a bite into a piece of molded bread I swore off that place forever. It was not just a fluke. I think they recycle their buffet food or something.

They still have the one in Pinconning, the foods still good there! ;)

When in Oscoda these days (to eat) we'll stop at either Mama's Kitchen or the Ausable Inn. My daughter and I are also fans of the KCF/Taco Bell combo they have there. And of course once off the river Wiltse's is a given ;) ..............
