How much are you willing to spend? For an all-around shotgun, the Rem 870 is great. So is the 1100 for that matter. All depends on your budget.

It doesn't much matter what we like. If you already know that you really like a Nova....there ya go, it is a fine shooter. Don't even worry about what everybody else says. You will be good to go with what you have in mind.

My brother has an 870 and LOVES it. I had an 1187 and got rid of it. I now have a Benelli Montefeltro and it is a great gun (not for deer, but everything else).

Good luck.

Went to Cabela's....... got in line at the Gun counter. said I need a Shotgun. Priamrily, Pheasant, Rabbit, Squirrel, Ducks.
He recommended a 12 gauge. I want a Pump(Personal Preference) less than $400 he said OK. Looked at all the Major brands. Kept coming back to the NOVA. It seemed a touch heavier but just felt right. So i bought it. Been blowing holes in the sky with it ever since.

Did a preserve hunt last Saturday. In the AM I did poorly( Wrong shot Size for the Conditions(( #8's blowing WInd)) in the PM switched to 5's and did MUCH better.

Anyways. Go with what feels "RIGHT" to you.

Had an 870, switched to a Nova. Fits me much better, it's a tank in the marsh or field, and have heard of no mechanical problems. The ONLY problem i can think of is that the forearm rattles, only enough to matter on a turkey hunt though. I've been seeing a growing trend in the 870's from many people....they aren't made like they used to be. Many people i know complain of jamming (especially the super mags) and other parts problems. My Nova cycles 3.5 great. The wood stocks are also made of birch and scratch like its made of balsa wood. My wingmaster is 20 years old and has held up fine though. I think you'll love the nova if you go that route...not a better gun on the market for around 300 (more if camo'd).

the only thing i can say about those nova's is that you need to remember to load them after you shoot. nice guns though.... :D

Had a rem. 1100, and had problems with jamming. Of course it was only when a deer was in front of you. Would go to the range right after a jam and it would work fine. Have a 870 now and have had no problems.

Here's my $.02 on subjects like this........

Several have already mentioned "feel" and thats what you should make a priority when choosing a shotgun. What fits one guy/gal isnt comfortable for the next guy/gal. Call me lucky, for a pump shotgun I like the feel of my Wingmaster 870 over the Nova. Even an Express pulls up better than a Nova for me. A Mossberg didnt cut it for me either......

So dont buy whats popular just because it is, making sure you like the way it fits and shoots far outweighs being popular....;)

i went the inexpensive route once again... and went with a charles daly.... I guess I got lucky... I've shot boxes through it and jam up only occurs by human error...

I've notice people talking about jamming up.... usually its because they are not racking in the new shell correctly.... fast and hard is the way to go... that s what they are designed to do...

I've had the 870 12 guage. Didn't like it grouse hunting after a long walk due to the weight. Had an 1187 semi auto 20, didn't like it at all with the exception of the style and engraving. Got rid of it and had my Beretta semi auto 20 now for 3 years and now I don't plan on getting any other shot guns unless I start waterfowl hunting.

I've never had it jam, and the thing is so light which is the best attribute.

The pumps jam because of Half-Racking the gun when in a hurry, 99.999 percent of the time. I have quite a few pumps...all the majors and my favorite all around pump is a Mossburg 835 Ulti-Mag. It is light and synthetic and takes a beating. I use it for rabbits to goose. Many more hundreds spent on other pumps but I really like the "FEEL" of that gun...yes the forearm does rattle. Try Dick's and Gander Mountain before Cabela's though for best prices.

...yes the forearm does rattle.

I sold that gun for that very reason. Killed lots of stuff with that gun and its was a terror on turkeys but I couldn't get past the rattle and sold it.

do you know why it rattles?

FWIW, if you are left handed you really want to make sure the safety is in a reachable position. I have my Grandpa's old 870, which I tried to hunt with last year. I dunno how many rabbits lived to see another day cuz I couldn't get that darned safety off. Picked up a Moss 500 last summer, and couldn't be happier. Safety on the comb, full camo, fiber-optic sight, screw in choke etc etc. Now, Grampa's gun just sits in the safe waiting to see if either of my sons can use it when they get old enough.

The Beretta 390 is a great all around gun if you can find one. I actually used one for competition sporting clays and for hunting. I put about 25,000 rounds through it with no problems.

I like the moss. 500 combo. Put the right shell in it and it will take down anything you are hunting.:D Just shoot straight;)
