Thats something that goes through my mind alot up here when in the woods.

The first time was back in December when I was technically bow hunting but really I was just following a stream to see where it went. Steped out of the truck at 3:00 local time and started walking. I knew at 4:00 I had to head back because at 5:00 it was going to be dark and I had never set foot in this section of woods and didnt have gear on my for an over night camp out in December :yikes: So at 3:58 I crested a hill and saw IT. a 100 acre beaver pond that looks like my new place to play one mile from the nearest road. But I had to leave and head back because mother nature accepts no excuses. It was going to get dark.

Since then I have tried to get there with my wife. But the snow was wet that day and snow shoes were heavy. We ran short on time. I went out with my son to try and find an easier way but all we found was the road

Today was the day 15 degree's sunny and 5 hours till dark. So off I went. 1/ 2mile into the walk I had a binding let go but I was able to repair it. 3/4 of a mile I put a snow shoe and my leg and boot up to mid calf through the ice and into the water. I fell when it happened and in 4 feet of snow getting up was to say the least intersting. I do remember saying outloud "dont panic" After getting my snow shoe and leg out which was not easy I ajusted my jeans so they wouldnt freeze to my skin and had to turn around. I was only 1/4 mile from the pond but I really didnt have a choice I wasnt sure how cold my foot would get.

As it turned out I didnt get all that cold and made decent time back to the truck.

All I can say is this must be the BEST beaver pond ever if its this hard to get to. Oh yeah there are ponds I can see from the road but that would be way to easy

still a fun day and I now know where there is some open water in the shape of a snow shoe. Maybe I can just set my traps there?

Bow Hunter Brandon,

Your story reminds me of my younger days beaver trapping  . But as you get older you leave these remote beaver ponds to young guys;) .

My insulated hip boots sure have saved me from getting frozen feet on many a day, when I would go in over the top. Just get out on dry land and pour the water out and wring out the socks. Then put the boot back on and get about the business of beaver trapping  .

Thanks for the great story! Let us know when you get this pond set up and what type of sets you end up using. The snowshoe stump set just might be a new one for the book, to add to NorthCountry's over the log 330 otter set ;) . You young trappers have all the luck!!!

Brandon, you will eventually get there. It will be worth it.
Dave, leave all those beaver for the young?Whats a mile back in anyway? Now I do admit ,the mile back with 120 punds of beaver is testing, but thats what gets us older guys back into shape----either that or we die from the exertion.Survival of the fittest you know lol.\

Ya, I have always said that I will most likely end my trapping career at the bottom of some beaver pond :D . But at the rate I am going it will probably be a pond that is close to the road  .

Like you say Tom, spring beaver trapping is a lot easier than chopping ice and I am in the boat with you on that one. Or should I say canoe?

Brandon,

I know this isn't about Trapping, but a Beaver Pond, a mile from the road? Can you say Brook Trout? :yikes: :corkysm55 FRANK.

I never said I was going to trap there

Ducks was my first thought on the beaver pond when I saw it. I need to double check in the spring but it sure looks like wild rice growing all around it.

My second thought was locked in brookies if the stream holds them. Which I have heard it does. BUT the only thing I have caught in the stream about a mile down stream of where this is are small northerns. Pond locked northers will work for me though

I will let you all know if I EVER make it to the thing. Going to try tomorrow I think.

Look, if you are gonna duck hunt it...you gotta get yourself in shape.

Come summer, the best way to do that is start strapping weight on your back to build up your muscles. You should easily be able to work up to 100 bags of corn or whatever you decide to hump out there in the middle of BFE.

It also sounds like you are gonna need to by a pirogue---at less than 55 lbs it should be easy to hump out there to get at everything. Look at all the stuff you are going to be able to write off....

If my new digital camera is delivered by then I will snap some pictures.

:lol:or try coon hunting. hauling a light, 2 dogs, a gun, and 60-100lbs of coon that is a work out right there.
