http://www.gunaccessories.com/BirchwoodCasey/16125_lrg.jpgBlue & Rust Remover
Blue & Rust Remover is a reliable solution that removes rust and blueing easily and quickly, without damaging the base metal. Safe for removing old finish from firearms, muzzleloaders and antiques. Also excellent for removing rust from tools, gauges and precision instruments. Blue and rust removal is a necessary step before reblueing or browning.
BIR16125 Blue & Rust Remover BR1 3 fl oz $5.95
I'd go to their website & email or call them with specific questions about your gun finish. Hope this helps !!!

This is the best stuff I've used. It will remove surface rust and I've seen it at Cabela's and Gander Mountain for $8.

A non-chemical method, light heat from a lited strerno can, 000 steel wool, and a good quality gun oil. takes longer but does a great job, also a dremmel tool kept on a LOW SPEED, with brass wheel and a good polish(flitz) on a polishing wheel works well

My advice. Take it to a gunsmith. Let him clean it up and safety check it for you. It sounds like you are not sure how it was stored or handled in the past. Maybe I am reading between the lines, something that isn't there. But I would have a pro take it apart and check it out completly. Now, that said understand that I am also partly suggesting this because this is your first posting here and I have no idea of your real experience with guns and hunting.
