When I was stationed at Ft. Riley Kansas back in the mid-seventies there were so many rabbits that there was not a bag limit on them. and ther was no closed seasons. And the hunting was too easy. I started using a High Standard revolver with a six inch barrel in .22 cal just to make it sporting. An old guy who had lived there on the property I hunted showed me how to whistle really loud when a bunny breaks from cover it will usually freeze in place long enough for a quick shot. I have used it here in Mich and it works reasonably well. Give it a try next time you are out without a dog. Oh yeah the whistle can't be a pucker up and blow kind of thing. It has got to be the fingers in the mouth( if you have too) really loud kind.

I used to know an old timer near Harrison who would carry a dog whistle for the same purpose, seems to work about 15% of the time.

I know it works I've been using a hawk screech to stop running pheasants and rabbits
