Nope. Tippy dam is the end of the road.

The Pine is a sweet little trout river though. Also I think I remember reading in some DNR report that in the old days, before Tippy was built, the steelhead fishing in the Pine was great.

And, correct me if I am wrong but, the state record walleye was taken below the Pine river dam (Stronach?) on the Tippy dam pond. Weighed in at 17+ pounds. That's what I read anyways.
Definitely some worthy water to fish on that system where ever you decide to fish. But no steelhead, maybe some "rainbows" though.

Not too pertinent to the thread, but I'm pretty sure that dam has been removed. I seem to recall one of the liveries running down just past it.

If your talking about the stronach dam, I believe your right Creek Chub.

Yup, no longer there. A nice set of rapids though from what I hear.

It’s probably a good thing that there are no anadromous fish in the Pine River! Could you imagine the outrage that would follow if the DNR put a fish ladder in at Tippy, and salmon and steelhead were able to migrate into the Pine? I myself would seek a front row seat for that! Poor Whit would probably have a debilitating psychological “episode” and Split Shot would end up incarcerated for crashing his Audi into the Cadillac DNR office and chasing Rozich and Tonello around with a baseball bat!

Besides, there more than enough places for the “typical” salmon and steelhead crowd, up there, to appropriate, access, assail, assault, arrogate, besmirch, breach, burglarize, burst in, bust in, befoul, blaspheme, commit sacrilege, contaminate, crud up, crumb up, confiscate, defile, dishonor, demolish, denude, depredate, desecrate, desolate, despoil, devastate, devour, dynamite, encroach, entrench, fall on, foray, go in, gut, horn in, infect, infest, infringe, inroad, interfere, invade, level, lay waste, lift, loot, maraud, muscle in, mess up, muck up, nab, occupy, overrun, overspread, overswarm, penetrate, permeate, pervade, pilfer, pillage, pinch, plunder, pollute, profane, prostitute, purloin, raid, ransack, ravage, raze, rifle, rob, ruin, sack, spear, spoil, spoliate, snag, steal, strip, scuzz up, sleaze up, swipe, stamp out, storm, swarm over, take apart, total, trash, thieve, trespass, usurp, vandalize, violate, waste, wreak havoc upon and wreck.

The Pine River doesn’t need to become one of them!

Sorry Whit and Splitshot, but that is hilarious:lol:

Excellent word useage TC...I might have had to get out the dictionary to come up with that many words:gaga:

I remember Whit mentioning running into a couple guys trying to catch steelhead there, aparently they truly had no clue Tippy was in the way:banghead3

That's a true story. The two guys were very disappointed because the hadn't seen any "beds" all morning. When I inquired as to what kind of "beds", they responded, "Why steelhead beds!" This was at Silver Creek Campground.

I told them that, "It would take one hell of a steelhead to make it up into the Pine River due to the fact the fish would have to jump over Tippy Dam on the Big Manistee River in order to get into the Pine R."

They were not convinced!

As for me having an "episode" if salmon and steelhead ever got into the Pine R. it wouldn't happen. I would remain calm, cool, and above the fray. Really I would! Yup! That's what I'd do! No doubt about it!

I'd really cry a lot though!........

No, no, my good fellow--I find that my Roget's Thesaurus is a much more effective tool than a dictionary. All one needs to do is look up the word, "Pillage" and the synonyms are seemingly endless!

Sounds very similar to the guy who claimed to me that he caught an Atlantic Salmon at the Mio access site to the Ausable. He had the yellow rod/zebco Kmart commando set up and was certain he would tag anotehr one is his honey hole LMAO. That Salmon would have had to portage Foote, Loud and Alcona Dams. I didn't have the heart to break it to him, I let him tell his story and then asked him some probing questions to see how far he would take it.

Welcome back, Toto! I'm a bit worried about Whit, however--normally any thread involving the Pine River would've been locked, deleted and thrown away before anyone had a chance to see it. The fact that Whit has left it open this long, let alone not closed it yet has me concerned for his health.

In fact, Whit is so quick to the trigger when it comes to this river, that he doesn't even wait for a thread to get posted.

For example, last week I was going to ask a question about canoe liveries up there. So, like anyone who needs good info, I began to type a new thread in the NW forum. This is what I was typing:

"Hello all! I'm thinking of doing some canoeing up on the Pine River this summer, can anyone give me the number of that..."

That's as far as I got before my keyboard locked up and a pop up message from Whit appeared. The pop up read:

Steven--tsk, tsk. You know that you're in violation of the M-S posting policy, so I'm closing and deleting this thread before it can get posted, plus I am issuing you a strike. Do not attempt to mention this river agian in the future! Sincerely, Whit.

Now, the first thoughts that entered my head were:

1) Since when did Whit start working for the N.S.A and is wiretapping a special "Super-Moderator" priveledge?
2) I need to get a new firewall for my computer.

Needless to say, I was upset that my right to privacy was invaded so I sent a PM to Whit. The first PM went like this:

2-14-06 8:31pm

Well, Happy Valentine's Day to you too, Whit! What did I do wrong and why am I getting a strike for trying ask about renting a canoe on the Pine River?
Please Explain. Wondering in confusion, Hutch

Whit's reply was quick and decisive:

2-14-06 8:34pm

Steven, You're fully aware that this river can't be mentioned in any, way, shape or form. Further more, I have decided that the words, "pine" and "river," cannot be mentioned anywhere in the same paragraph. Tread carefully, Mr. Hutchins, you are teetering near the edge here! Respectfully, Whit.

That absolutely blew my mind, so I asked another question:

2-14-06 8:44pm.

So what you're saying, Whit, is that those two words cannot be present in the same flippin' paragraph? What if I'm waxing poetic and trying to describe a gorgeous morning. For example:
"I love being on the river at dawn--watching the mist rise off of the water as the first rays of light penetrate the branches of the nearby pine trees?"
Even THAT isn't allowed now? Hutch

His reply:

2-14-06 8:49pm

No, Steven--that is NOT acceptable, too specific. It doesn't take a moron to figure out what you're really trying to say there. You might think you're being clever by doing that, but 'ol Whit can put two and two together. You're being watched very closely, young man--do not try to pull the whool over my eyes again! Sternly, Whit.

I gave up after that, but as you can see, something has happened in the last week that has softened in stance--perhaps someone should check on Whit?

Steve, I've been around off and on all along. I just live in Florida now, and don't have much to say of any relevance, thats assuming that I ever did.

As for Whit, what can I say, he's really a big softy inside. I was going to report about fishing a river down here, but I knew it would be deleted immediately, that and the fact I can't spell Caloosahatchee River, didn't bode well for me, and I couldn't quite decide which forum to put it in. Oh well, lets just say I still enjoy this site greatly, it sorta helps me get through the steelie season.

I've fished the Pine since the early 60's. As I age I find I do it less and less, but I have plenty of GREAT memories--in fact, I dream about it at least once a week.

I put a picture of the river with the dam and with the dam removed on our clubs website a few minutes ago. If you want to take a peek do it in the next week as I will be removing it soon (the picture from the web site)....just thought some of you might want to see the results.

Yes they did. They released fish above Tippy (they still couldn't get far into the Pine R. due to Stronach Dam.

They also dumped some above Hodenpyle Dam above Tippy and also above Homestead Dam (when it was a power dam) on the Betsie.

Oldgrandman
02-28-2006, 06:05 PM
I know some large "rainbows" have been caught in Hodenpyle many years back. Also a buddies dad got a couple above Croton dam about 10 years ago.
If they were resident rainbows moved down from the streams or transplanted steelies? I guess we'll never know. But a 5-6 pound rainbow caught in those waters is a pretty nice fish either way.

I am invoking Code 35 section 7 of the MS bylaws on this thread. What the hell Code 35 section 7 of the MS bylaws are, I don't know but I am invoking them. While I am investigating this violation on said river and I mean literally on said river I must ask all to avoid said river as to the possibility you may contaminate evidence. Duration of moratorium on fishing said river will be April 29th thru September 30th. As a alternate river to fish during this moratorium you are welcome to fish the Kah-loose-ah-hatch-ee river as a viable alternate. Thank you for your cooperation. ;)
