Eight of us are headed to Houghton this Thursday and staying until Sunday. None of us have ever been there. Looking for some advice, I know its kinda late. We are staying at Lees Southside inn and will be probably fishing the south bank. We will be walking so it sounds like the middle ground is out of the question. We are after crappies, perch and walleyes. How deep should we be fishing and with what lures? Any info will help. Also we plan on using a couple of tip ups. DO these count as your limit of 2 poles? For tip ups for pike, do you set the hook as soon as they take it or wait for them to take it a second time? Thanks for any responses. Is there a problem with fishing on the lake after dark with the snowmobles running?

We were just there this past weekend. We stayed at Lee's also. PM me if you want and I can let you know a couple things about Lee's that might help you out. As for the fishing in that area, it was slow all weekend. Last year we caught 40 or so fish in a weekend but not even half that this year. Walleye, perch and crappies can be caught there but I have yet to see any on my few trips to that weedbed other than small perch. Lots of hammerhandle pike are the norm. The group of shanties right out in front of your cabin is the weedbed (200-300yards). You may want to get away from them a little and try the edges. You are allowed two lines and tip-ups count. Pike will hit just about anything with a sucker/grey/blue/shiner on it when they are hungry. We usually fish one rod and one tip-up per man. The baitshop(Lymans) is right next door and a lot of the shanties out there are available for rent. He takes good care of you. They were driving full size trucks out last weekend. Good luck!!
