I have never bought or fished a hali jig and everyone seemed to be doing well on them this weeked but I never got to see what size or color they were. Any help from someone on this? Need to know size and a couple of "go to" colors. Thanks

Only buy glow in the dark, I have the best luck with blue glow in the dark....

I prefer the smaller sized ones in the glow colors...glow green and white zebra stripe/glow blue have served me well smelting on Higgins.

they ALL work! just tie one on and they do the rest. minnows, spikes, mousies, waxworms, whatever.
I'm a FIRM beliver in the Hali.
Already caught me pike, crappie, blue gill and bass this season. Now I gotta go get me some glowing ones. Never tried em. :)

One of my favorite lures. I use a white and red glow when the sky is dark, and a green and gold when its bright. For perch I usually tip it with a soft red anise bead. It works especially well on Simcoe where its important to get the lure back down quick in the deep water. I must admit that I have lost a few real big fish at the hole and wish the hooks were more like a # 8 instead of the 12's that are on them.

Stop in at Riley's and see what Terry has to say, although I don't think he fishes smelt much. Backcast Fly Shop in Benzonia (plaza) can also help you out. I've done well in the smaller sizes in blue/silver.
Crystal Lake is frozen and they are taking smelt and some perch just east of RR Pt. There isn't much parking though due to the snow.

Everytime I go past Riley's he is closed..I mean all times of the day. We need a serious bait shop in town. Nemic is open but never has much. Thanks for the tip on Crystal. We set up our permanent on Green Saturday and I am sticking there for the season. Might try Crystal with the portable later.
Thanks to all who responded.
Whit..would you be available for a trip to green on short notice?? I got everything we need so it would just be grab a lunch and something to drink and I could pick you up. Let me know via pm.

I am set up (with a couple dozen others) on the south west side and have about 5-6 inches of ice with about 3 inches of water on top under the shanty. Outside there is about 8 inches of frozen snow and slush on the ice. It was a bear to walk in this past weekend but with the cold it has firmed up. Quads and snowmobiles not a problem.
Had the camera down the other nite and had a perch asleep on the bottom in about 50 ft of water. Didnt have the recorder so couldnt get a picture.
People catching fish...had a smelt dinner last nite....mmmmmmm!!

Green has been frozen for weeks. All gold or silver hali work great for smelt or perch. I reccomend a multi hook rig for smelt with the hali at the bottom for weight. We did well with that setup the past two weeks.

I had the opportunity to watch the hali in action on camera last nite. Had a real slow nite on the southeast end. The chain on the hali really flashes and I am sure it has some reason for the success.
Saw a really neat thing that I have never seen before. The bottom had tons of shiners that were actually chasing the smelt away. The shiners outnumbered the smelt 20 to one. Occasionally, the shiner would come and hit the hali and be gone before I had a chance to react. I did manage to catch one. All the shanty's around me had poor luck.
Now a question.... I would like to move my shanty, maybe to the state park area. To those who know the lake, is it possible to pull the shanty across the ice with a snowmobile?? I know that it is a long pull. My other choice is to put the shanty on the trailer. I think that if i have to do that, I might rather take the shanty over to Crystal Lake which is 15 minutes closer to my house. Need advice from those who know.
One other question..parking at Crystal is limited from what I hear. Where would be the best place to unload a snowmobile to access the fishing??
Thanks in advance.

Without being on the lake to see how much snow and possibly slush is on the ice I couldn't say about pulling your shanty with a snowmobile. If there isn't too much slush a shanty hauls fine behind a sled.
As for parking off RR. point on Crystal there isn't much and it fill up fast. There are other places to catch smelt on Crystal Lake, the yacht club off the west end being one and off Beulah is another, but I haven't seen clusters of shanties there in several years.
As for getting on and off the ice on Crystal Lake and fishing RR Pt. the best thing, if there is no parking near the point is to put your sled on the ice in town and take that out to your shanty.
