Hey all,
It's been quite a while since i have posted on here, mostly because i have since pulled up my trapline for the year. But now I am starting trapping up again-this time for rabbits. Before you start typing a response that reads something like "it is illegal to trap rabbits in MI" or something of the sorts let me explain. I'm a senior at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. Currently i am enrolled in a wildlife management class. As a project we are trying to determine how many eastern cottontails we have on campus and what types of cover they're utilizing.
Due to a recent boom in development on campus there has been a tremendous loss of flat, brushy areas that the rabbits like to hang out in--resulting in a sharp decline in their populations on campus. So far I've spent many hours in the library looking up journal articles on rabbit behavior/habitat/food sources etc. in order to type up a paper describing to the proffessor everything we can find out about the cottontails. Finally we get to the fun part--we just put out 5 live traps yesterday in hopes of catching some rabbits so we can fit them with a radio collar so we can determine what habitats they're using on campus.
I'll post pics in a later post hopefully along with some photos of some captures. I'm expecting we might catch some squirrels, coons, etc. along with some rabbits based on bait choice--but all other animals have to be released in accordance with the permit we obtained from the University to trap on campus. SORRY ABOUT THE LONG POST!! but yeah pics will be up soon hopefully we can get some results!!

Here are a couple of photos I took of my classmates making their live-trap sets. We used a cubby set with sticks/hay underneath the trap to keep the rabbits dry while inside the trap and then covered the trap with garbage bags then hay and finally brush to further insulate and somewhat conceal the traps. I know they don't look horribly natural in these pictures but it was fairly early in the set process and we added sticks, etc. later but due to camera issues i wasn't able to get a pic of a finished set. http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/photopost/data/500/medium/Picture_0046.jpg

another one. We placed the traps in some pretty tight spots--even briar patches, and i got the scratches to prove it!! (Not me in the photo)

Looks like typical government work.
1 man working 4 men watching.

Maybe you should dangle a carrot above those traps:lol: Have fun!

hoyt,

question for you what kind of bait are you using??? Just wondering what you are using for eye appeal and lure. Cottontails can be kind of tough to get into live traps but it looks like by the pic you guys are doing good. Another thing to try is a double door live trap in a pathway they are using with a little lure to stop them just a little.

Believe me i asked my proffessor if I could maybe keep a few rabbits for a nice stew but she said it might affect our results:lol: . As for bait we are using a mix of rabbit pellets, corn, sunflower seeds along with a few bits of apples. We made our sets in thickets as close to rabbit sign as we could. This area we are trapping is right near a hiking trail so we needed to put them in briar thickets to ward off anyone who might want to sabatoge our traps. Of course all of us in the Natural Resources Management program at GVSU are crazy anyway so the briars don't bother us much. I haven't heard anything yet but i have the class today so i can give a better update later on today.
Dave, the double door trap is a good idea i'll have to check to see if we have any.

no results yet. We are thinking about wiring the traps open over the weekend and add some fresh bait in the trap and trap opening to hopefully make the rabbits more accustomed to the traps.

Might try alfalfa cubes for bait.

hoyt,

If you need help with bait let me know. I won't post it publicly. Yes it is legal also. I am in the business ADC they are very tough to get into a trap sometimes.
