i don't think there's any safe ice in the downriver area. i have fished that marina and did fairly well on the perch, but i don't know the name of it either.

Name of it is lake erie metro park marina. hasnt been any ice around here so I havent even checked there, but it usuaaly is some of the first ice in the area to freeze, so with the cold weather the last week there is a possibility it hhas some ice, if the wind hasnt stopped it from forming, If theres no ice you can always fish off the docks. I have caught some decent crappys there, and some perch.

was there sunday as a result of some bad reports from a bait shop which will remain nameless( right outside the gate) he said there was no ice and they were getting plenty of perch. after buying minnows from him we discovered not enough ice to be safe and no open water to cast to. so wasted trip. did talk to afew people out there and they said it is usually pretty good. i wish there were a few more people from this area on this site so i could get a reliable report. nice area.

wAS out there Saturday, and there was some open water. If you go back, try at the corner of the marina where the canal opens up into the marina. That's where most guys been fishing. Not my cup of tea- a little too "shoulder to shoulder" for my tastes. The water behind Mike's marine store is full of perch, but you will probably get kicked out. They are not too friendly there. A good spot is the first bridge over south huron river drive just off jefferson. Lots of perch there, but you have to sort through them.

I suspect that if you went through the Park you ended up at the Lee Road Marina which used to be the Metropark marina. The ice was thin last week and my buddy who lives in Flat Rock poked holes in the ice and tried fishing from the docks without much sucess. From time to time the perch come in there and you can do well but they don't seem to stay long. The best area is in the main channel off the end of the docks. The gate off Jefferson is closed during the winter so you have to go all the way through the park.

Yeah, that Marina can get really hot, ususally after an east wind blows the water in, along with the perch. I am suprised it don't have safe ice, usually that freezes up fast and good.
But, that is major hit and miss. One day you will get 30 8+, the next you will get a couple dinks.

Was there a specific reason that you didn't check the ice/lack of before you bought bait, considering you were so close?

Prob because he trusted the guy and was in a hurry to get on the water. The other opt would have taken more time.
We have all done it......at least I have.....stopped on my way in to save time when I was starting late in the day.
If the guy told him there was safe ice there and there wasn't.....that is crappy.
Keep in mind though....there are tons of guys who have been fishing open water all around there.....if you didn't say ice he may not of known.
He has been pretty good to me over the years. Never bad info that I was able to tell.
