DaYoop

well since there are gatherings popping up all over the state, why not one more.

Anybody interested in a little fishn trip in the Lansing area? Lake Lansing is just down the road from me. Well if anyone's interested we'll set it up sometime--if it gets cold out again:rolleyes: Let me know if interested, thanks

alrighty then--sounds like there is at least some interest ;)

I'm tentatively thinking about sometime around the 25th to the 27th. Any input on that? Really doesn't matter as long as I have notice.

Oh, If there is anyone that has never Ice fished before--dont' let it hold ya back, I'm sure we can set ya up and let ya give it a try!

Lets here it?????? where we going????

Craig M
01-14-2002, 07:11 PM
I have a shanty with room for 1 more (you bring your own seat) and one of those Mr. Heater cooker things that keeps the shanty nice and toasty warm and we can use it to boil up dogs, heat chili and such.

Well,,,, the 26th???? Come on guys,,,, whats the holdup?????? Is there gonna be an outing or what??????

Craig M
01-14-2002, 07:23 PM
The wife & I have some friends in from out of town on the 26th, so I vote for the 27th.

DaYoop
01-14-2002, 08:13 PM
Lets do it then :)

It doesn't matter to me if its the 26th or the 27th, whichever is most convienient. Craig M says no to the 26th--any objections to having it the 27th??

Location is also up to who all is going--I've only been to Lake Lansing and Park Lake around here. Both have good numbers of panfish, and I heard that Park Lake has been producing channel cats. If anyone is bored could ya try to find some solid reports for me?

I want dibs on a seat in a shanty though :) Thats the only piece of equipment I don't have yet. :)

So its official, there will be an outing--we just need to iron out the details.

I'm looking forward to it,

DaYoop

i'm up for an ice fishing outing, if the weather and the ice cooperate!! i have never fished lake lansing or sleepy hollow, but only live about 20 minutes east of lansing so it wont be that hard to get there.

if i get a vote i woud vote for a sunday, my saturdays are pretty busy, but i think i have the 26th free. i have to check my schedule about it yet, but if it is i will be there. but i dont care either way. if i can make it i will.

as far as tackle and all that goes, i dont have a good ice pole, but am hoping to get one really soon. that is if i get the chance to get out on the ice this year. so far our pond isnt cooperating a whole lot with us. does anyone have any opinions on the rods with the ultra lite reels on them?? i have never used one like this before on the ice and wonder how it works. i usually just use the old round style reels. but i have been looking at them and wondering what they were like, and if i just get a rod would the reel from my ultra lite panfish/trout set up work. it holds up to 4lb test on it.

thanks guys

Have Trap will travel, :) Lansing area is near enough for me. Never fished Lake Lansing what type of fish should we expect to fish for? Depth? Etc.

Craig M

Lake Lansing is shallow, I think about 5 feet average. Good pike and panfish and some perch. Tiger muskies in there too. Lots of weed beds.

HERE IS THE DATE 26th WHERE: LAKE OVID (SLEEPY HOLLOW STATE PARK ) at the boat ramp 7:30am 8:00ish channel 11 on the radios, there is no bait shop close by!!! gills, perch ,crappie, pike ,heard they planned musky in the lake last year don't how if its true :) see everbody there

I plan on being there. There is a party store just west of Shepredville road on Round Lake road that sells waxworms, minnows, etc. called Don's Party Store. They also sell the party supplies. I think they open at 7:00. It's only about 5 miles from the park. It's where I'll buy my bait. I'll bring some hot dogs and buns and my coleman stove to heat stuff on. Looking forward to getting on the ice. Dave

I'm looking good for the 26th, 93% sure I can attend!

The cooking on the ice idea is a good one too, nothing like a nice warm pick-me-up. I have a single burner propane coleman "stove-top" type grill (not a grill top) that can heat up pans of stuff, etc. I can bring dogs/brats/buns/ketchup/etc., whatever is needed. If most people bring something in a loosely coordinated fashion, everyone eats and life is fun and good.

Besides, once everyone gets a whiff of Treehunter's shanty from last weekend, they'll be instantly hungry! Shanty Brats anyone?! ;)

The flagg idea sounds good. It should have some meaning to it. Mabe a picture of a perch talking on a two-way radio. What do You think Ice Fishing Nut. I think I can come up with some kind of outdoor banner by then.

DaYoop
01-17-2002, 01:52 PM
Cool idea for the banner! Does that mean your volunteering DANN09? :D

Quix20--I basically just use the ultralight set ups. Its all I've ever used but I really like them.

CraigM--maybe we'll have a 2nd trip :) Also, my afternoons are usually free so give me a hollar if ya want to take a trip during the week.

Craig M
01-17-2002, 02:31 PM
I'm booked solid during the week and most Saturday's (my wife see's to that. I think she said something along the lines of it keeps me out of trouble, or something like that. Don't really know, try not to listen), but Sunday's are generally mine.

If a second trip gets scheduled, the more advanced notice I get, the better chance I can get out.

Just to set the record straight, I'm not PW'ed (I think), my wife works a slightly schedule than me and I have kids.

What should I bring? Is there alot of ice/Spud or Power Auger. Portable shanty? And where do I pick up bait by Dimondale? AND last of all do I need a state park sticker.

DaveW731
01-19-2002, 03:54 PM
I'm for the 26th at Lake Ovid/Sleepy Hollow. In fact, already have arranged the time off of work. Seems like fishing is picking up, too. I will be fishing there this Tuesday, AND WILL POST RESULTS...
My last trip to Lake Lansing was pretty discouraging. I saw a total of 4 flags out of 16 tip ups, and saw no panfish caught at all
Also, lots of parking in different areas, which is an advantage over Lake Lansing.
Thanks to DaYoop and Treehunter for getting this started....I don't have a portable grill, but I will spring for a couple dozen dogs and buns.

Sportsman, glad to hear your coming, more the merrier. No sticker needed, not sure if they rack ya at the gate or not, never got hit up last year when I went though.

Hoffie1 and I plan on being there too, 7:30am - 8:00am at the boat launch, channel 11 on FRS, shanties in tow, all the other gear any iceman needs too.

My wife is baking us some homemade cookies for all to enjoy. Anything else ya'll want/need ? Sounds like we'll be covered at the food end of things, but ya never know !

I put this outing on the Outdoor Calendar also, hope we get a good turnout, if someone misses out, they're loss ! gonna be a blast.

okay guys, i went to gander mountain this morning and picked up some jigs and stuff, they have all their ice fishing stuff at least 25% off right now.

i have a couple of questions for you all though. i am not a "regular" ice fisher, so i do not have all the little goodies. i really just started getting back into ice fishing since i got married. i usually go with my father-in-law and he has all the good stuff. the auger, the sled, the spud and so on and so forth.

is there gonna be an auger i can borrow to drill some holes with??? what about shanties??? or are we just sitting in the elements.

and i would still like to know if there is any food source that someone would like for me to bring to contribute to the group.

also, does anyone have any more info on the tourney that someone had mentioned in a previous post that is supposed to be going on saturday??

thanks

let me make sure i got the directions straight. i am coming from east of lansing, so i will take 96 to 127N to the price (or is it pierce) exit and head east right?? where is the bait shop so i can get some minnows?? i would get them friday night, but wont get out of reffing until like 10 or 11, and i dont think they would last too long over night:D

what other baits should i look at getting besides minnows and waxworms?? i dont know much about these mousies that everyone talks about.

cant wait to meet you guys and i am really looking foward to a very exciting day out on the ice!! just hope the action is hot and not the weather!!!!!!!! and if this is anything like the river outings i have been too, then we are all in for a looonnngggg day of laughter and good times.

I will be at Ovid by about 9:30 am, and plan to fish till dark. Treehunter: I'll plan to be around our usual area north of the boat launch by around 3:00. Before then, I'll be checking out other parts of the lake, in terms of accessability, ice conditions and fishing productivity. I'll try waxworms, spikes (and wigglers if I can find them).
Anyone who wants to join me, I'll be wearing a green coat, duck colored carharts and pulling a light/natural colored wood sled.
Keeping fingers crossed for good weather!

Here is the latest Lake Ovid report:
fishing was OK, but concentrated at the beginning and end of the day. I caught my limit in 4 hours, with at least 15 fish in the last 2. Guys who were there in the A.M said they caught about the same amount during the first two hours of daylight (just like Treehunter said!) Fish were on the smallish side (all less than 8"), but big enough to make into "Bluegill McNuggets".
As to ice.....looks like "maybe" at best for Saturday. There was 7" of good ice when I started, but probably lost 1/2" by the time I left. If it stays warm AND rains, I am afraid the shoreline will degrade so much that we can't get on. We will have to wait and see. I am sure one of us Lansing guys can check on ice, but it may not be till Friday, before we can make any determination. Hope everyone can hang loose

northern_outdoorsman
01-23-2002, 01:28 AM
That's what I was gonna say...Can someone nearby check the Ice there say Friday around 4pm and post...cause if I don't see a post by Friday at 9pm saying the Ice is good, comeon out, then I am gonna go try for some steel at a local River.....

i have to concur with the current consensus, but they are saying it is gonna start getting colder at night starting tonight near freezing then steadily getting colder the next couple of days.

im not too worried about it, should be okay, especially if there was 7 inches on it. but if someone would post that would be great.

DaveW731
01-23-2002, 11:15 PM
I'll check on the ice at Ovid on Friday, sometime between noon and 4 pm, and post results by 5pm. I am still hopeful, given that we missed the rain and that it is not as warm as originally forecast.
When I post, I will tell how thick I believe the ice to be, when I checked it, how many places I checked and my impressions of the condition of the ice itself. I obviously can make no claims to perfection, but I will tell you if I plan to fish on Saturday or not. Hopefully, this will help you out-of-town people with your decision.
If we have good ice, hope to see you all on Saturday. If not, lets hope for another cold snap, so we can try this again in a couple of weeks.
Let's be safe out there!!!!!!

Got some encouraging news from Wetfoot; he was at Ovid today, had GOOD ICE and LOTS of FISH!!!!!
I will still check the ice tomorrow to be sure, as I said, but I think we can plan on an outing.
Also, just to keep everyone up to date, here are the directions to Sleepy Hollow State Park (Lake Ovid):
Take US 127 North of Lansing to PRICE Road exit. Price Road is north of Round Lake Road exit and south of St. John's exit. There is also a sign for Sleepy Hollow, just south of the Price exit. Take Price Road East, approximately 8 miles. There are some bends in the road in a couple of places. After about 7.5-8miles, you will come to the first and only stop sign. You will see park signs at that point. Proceed straight through the stop sign for about 1/2 mile to the park entrance on your left. Prior to the entrance, you will go over a bridge and see the lake on your left. Once in the park, you will take the road all the way around the lake to the boat launch (takes about 5 minutes or so). This is the area that has the easiest access to the widest variety of spots, plus is about the easiest place to get grills, sleds and other hardware on to the ice. when I post tomorrow afternoon (sometime between 2 and 4 pm), I will provide more details, to suggest places to meet. I may not be able to get there on Saturday till about noon....when will you other guys be getting there?

DaYoop
01-24-2002, 11:49 PM
that is good news--thanks Dave!

I was planning on getting there first thing--7:30--if thats when people were going to be showing up.

I was thinking we could jump on the campfire tomorrow night if anyone has any questions or anything like that.

I was also thinking that it may be easier for a few of us to "pair up" with the bait--since for me personally I've never fished this lake and have no clue what to get, it might be easier for me to ask someone else to just pick up double and I'll pay ya at the lake or something like that.

I also have a little venison keilbasa I could be persuaded into bringing as well. Let me know,

GOOD NEWS: looks like a go to me! checked out the lake. About 6 inches of good ice. When out and bought hot dogs, buns and bait, wax worms, red spikes and mousies. I'm in it for the gills. I picked up a few maps for the lake at the DNR office. Also drove around to the boat launch. Just a thought, let's meet where the floating docks are stored. Just left of the boat launch, that way we'll be able to tell who's who to some extent. With the nice temperatures and a weekend it'll be crowded. I'll be there before 7:30,I live less then 2 miles from Sleepy Hollow. I'll have a thermos of coffee and be able to cook some more. Damn, forgot to get extra water, but its availble at te park. Again, I'll be drivin' a olive green f150 4x4 parked where the floating docks are stored. Looking forward to meeting you "guys"(if some of the ladies are attending) Dave

Here is my report, as promised
Basically, I am in total agreement with Flannelfish. We must have crossed paths. I was at the lake from about 12:15-1:15, checking ice (and catching a couple fish, to boot!)
Anyway, I actually MEASURED the ice with a ruler, and got 51/2"- 61/2", everywhere I checked. Quality of the ice looked good: maybe 1/4" of sponge, with the rest hard and clear. Shoreline around the boatlaunch looks the strongest on the lake, so I agree with Flannel's suggestion about where to meet. The ice was tight up to the shore, at that point. Probably will be a bit of water around shore by tomorrow, but I am not worried about it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get there till about noon, so I will look for you all on the ice. I'll also bring some more wax worms and spkes, but I am going to guess we will have plenty of bait. ( Let me put in a plug for my favorite bait shop in Lansing, Grand River Bait and Tackle, 536 E. Grand River, 517-482-4461. If you ever want honest info about fishing in the Lansing area, call there and ask for Wayne. He also carries great shiners and sucker minnows)
Send me an email or PM, if you have any questions, particularly about directions. Also, if you want me to bring any goodies when I come out at noon, let me know. I won't have another chance to get on line about 11:00 pm, and then not again after that, so please contact me by then.
I'll be wearing duck-colored carhart bibs, with a red and black jacket ( a Lansing Lugnuts warm up jacket, to be exact). So, if you see me wandering around looking for you all, give a holler! I AM PUMPED ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!:D :D

Hey boys,

I'm new to this thread, but I think I'll show up. I should be there sometime in the morning.

Can someone give me some info on what bait is working, colors, and the kind of fish there?

Thanks!

I mainly use wax worms or spikes for the gills. I havent found one color to outproduce any other. I kinda like the greens and chartruse colors.

Don't know if anyone will read this at this late date, but...looks like I can be there at 7:30 for a couple of hours, then I'll have to leave and come back. Be hard to tear myself away, but that means I can pick up stuff, if we need anything.
See you all at the boat launch tomorrow!!!!!!

IFN---You missed some of the best fishing I've ever seen, we all limited out!!

Limited out on FUN that is. It was a great time, even better weather, but the fish had better ideas today--oh well, thats fishn.

I did the worst of us all I think--not a single bite all day :) But heck, thats ok with me.

Thanks everyone that went, brought food, helped me lug all my crap around on the ice and everything else--I had a blast.

Fishin' was a little slow, but like you said, that's fishin'!

I stopped by Lake Chemung on the way home, cought about 7 small gills and a few perch, threw them all back.

Then a guy a few holes down brought up a pike about 30" he cought on his jigging pole. It was a very nice fish.

I was off the ice by 2:00pm and it was really beginning to crack. It will be a few days for that lake to shape up again.

When is the next outing?

I Want to thank dayoop & tree hunter 2 for the outing. I had a great time & it was nice to meet some of the fine sportsman from this site. Thanks to nuts for the use of the grill & joes cat for the dogs -beer-breads. Thanks whale for the bread & cookies. I'm looking forward to another outing. (ice permitting).

Yes, another fine outing! It was real fun seeing some of you guys again, and meeting you others too!
Amanda and I had a great time! She told me that several times.

We're tied for worst, DaYoop. Yeah, fishing was rather on the slow side. Well, more like entirely on the slow side. I think that ended up making it just as much fun laughing about it.
But really everyone, you shoulda SEEN the SIZE of some of those fish that were caught.

And of course, we had to practice again the precise art of summoning the water to the top side of the ice. Yes, our theories about that are indeed panning out. Whale, how's that minnows' training coming along? :D He was doing quite the Michael Jackson there, that minnow's got the MOVES! How'd you get him to tail walk like that?

And we also proved again that it is entirely possible to fish in 1/2" of water, probably more. ;)

Thanks Dave for the ice report, and the guide services. It's just going to take time to teach the fish to bite.

And our ice warrior, I see you have honed your spud very well, into a razor sharp precision ice puncturing instrument. Slaying black ice with a single blow - *thwump*. A hole. Then water.

Thanks for the grill, Nuts! Thanks for the propane Hoffie / Whale, all the pieces came together on that one.

Next outing?

Time for me to go look exactly like I'm sleeping. . .

Was thew outing a success ?,....absolutely. Lots of laughs and fun from another great group of guys/girls.

Again I neglect to bring a camera but I'm sure that some pics will make it to the site from someone!?!

Sharpest spud I've ever seen. Like a hammer thrown from "Thor".

Joe's Cat, you have one of the greatest young women for a daughter, a real reflection from her father (and of course, MOM). Her enjoyment of just being outdoors experiencing all the small things that went on for her,......icefishing of course with "all the little things" that we have happen (damn line tangled, Pike bit off my teardrop !, hands are froze, out of liquid propane, out of liquid refreshments !, damn line tangled, lost my splitshot down the hole, etc.), to finding her skeletons (I'll let someone else explain that one !), etc. etc. , getting an education of physics concerning downward pressure vs. ice strength ! A real good time.

Walking as if they were preparing for a marathon ! (I prefer an atv but heh, thats me.) They were in search of the "Holy Grounds" of gills',.....last I heard, they're still looking.

"Is the ice shrinking ?", was often heard on the radio.

"More banana bread and cookies !", wheres' the "dogs and brats ?"

"No fish yet,...anyone ?, anyone ?, nope. Still looking.

Couple of people left or took a siesta from all the excitment by taking short "road trips", eh Dave ?, eh Dennis ?

Watching a fish fight a teardrop when hooked on my underwater camera, very cool, the flash of a bluegill in the water (very clear !), was cool. First time I've had a chance to see that with the new toy !

Lots of fun.

Dam sorry that I missed that one!!!! Sounds like you guys had a great time.... I do have to agree with Whale, Amanda is a great young lady,,,, Keep up the good work Amanda and pretty soon you will be outfishing your dad!!!!

I have just one question though........ Who is it that almost pulled an IFN specail and almost lost thier radio????????

Come on,,,,, fess up??????

amanda, is truly a great young lady. she was very well behaved and when the fish werent biting, oh wait, they never did go on the bite did they??LOL well when there was nothing else to do, she would explore the islands and land around where we were at. she came back one time with 2 skeletons of some type of animal. that our very own vet:D da yoop said was a bird of some type.

whale, my legs are still sore this morning from all of the walking we did to find the elusive, but seductive when caught bluegill. i guess my map reading prowess is off a bit, i thought i could put us on fish somehow, but alas it was not to be. guess i just need to fish with splitshot a little bit more, so i can drink from his knowledge of reading the water to find the fish!!

IFN, i dont know if the person who did that will ever fess up to dropping the radio. after all, it was your name that was brought up many times throughout the day and the little story that was involved. we just need to get a waterproof radio so we can stick it down the hole and call the damn fish in!! HERE FISHY, FISHY.
