In the interest of leveling the playing field with an obviously skewed poll, here's another poll on mandatory antler restrictions.

To clarify, the first option is for antler restrictions more restrictive than the current 3" spike rule.

There are definitely other options that would benefit deer management better than MARs. There are also other deer managment options that would be much better than a one-buck limit.

It wasn't a skewed poll.

It was simply a poll...of which one would you prefer if the DNR said we're going to do one of these two...and you have to vote one or the other because the old way isn't staying. Which one would you prefer. That's all he wanted to find out in the poll.

As you stated, there are better options. That having been said I'd be very
interested in hearing what better options there are than combining 1 buck with MARs in order to better buck to doe ratios and buck age structure.
Let's make it a "Given" that more does have to be harvested so with those three aspects addressed what's better ?

OK, but remember walleyechaser asked for it.

In my opinion, the following sweeping changes would be a much better deer management scenario than either MARs or a one-buck limit in Michigan:

1) Do away with single archery deer, firearm deer and combination licenses and replace them with a simple buck license for a fee of around $20. A buck tag would only be valid for bucks with one antler at least 3” long. Also raise the price of antlerless tags to $20 each.

2) Have voluntary registration of deer and only hunters that check in a buck that is an adult (2 years old or older) will be offered the option to buy a second tag with a four point on one antler restriction. The price of the second buck tag would also be $20.

3) Require that all buck fawns killed be first tagged with an antlerless tag in the field with the additional requirement of a special “button buck tag” for $20 which must be purchased within 24 hours of killing the animal. Failure to buy the “button buck tag” after harvesting a button would constitute an illegal deer (poaching).

4) Make the killing of antlered bucks illegal on properties where crop damage is reported to the DNR and special tags are issued. All crop damage permits would cost $20 each. If button bucks are killed under crop damage permits, then they must be tagged with both a crop damage permit and a “button buck tag” at $20 each.

5) Enact a wonton waste law like many other states have. If people purposely waste game, then it should be treated severely by the law.

6) Shrink the size of DMUs to the section level (640 acres) to determine deer population levels for the issuance of all antlerless permits.

7) Replace the September youth hunt with an antlerless only hunt open to anybody with an antlerless permit.

8) Make the first week of firearms deer season good only for taking antlerless deer by permit only.

9) Have the muzzle loader deer season run statewide from Dec. 1 to Dec 7.

10) Add $2000 to the fines for an illegal deer if the poached deer is a buck.

I voted to keep the current tag system.
