I stopped and checked my food plots today (1/29). The oats are still green and the deer are using them quite alot. Is it possible with this mild winter that they could survive into spring? They were a cold weather type like BFO oats.

My rye is showing a little useage and my winter wheat none at all. I still have alot of rape, it would appear that they only eat a little before moving on. One of my corn plots is stripped but the other still has a lot of full ears with lots of deer sign in it.

I'm hoping that one of the benefits of my food plots still having food and attracting deer is that it will keep them out of people's backyards along with their temptation to poach them.

I have had a few plants of the oats survive if under a lot of snow. Not very often, though. Many farmers here report no frost in the ground. They are getting stuck hauling manure. Most years we have 4 plus feet of frost.

That's a real bummer, but look on the bright side, that probably means the local deer herd has more than enough to eat...should be pretty fat and healthy!
