The outing was cancelled at the end of January. Here is a link to the announcement on their msg board (http://www.lakestclairwalleyeassociation.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=43&forum_id=10) about half way down.
I put a quick article in the club newsletter about it. The President and the committee just felt that there would not be enough safe ice out on the bay so they had to cancel.
There was even a msg on the Lake St. Clair Ice Fishing forum on this Message Board back around the end of the month.
I was looking forward to the outing and had decided to make a big pot of chili after all. Oh, well. Maybe next year.

FYI: I just spoke with Matt Roberts who organized the event and everthing is a go! He checked the ice yesterday and was out about 1/2 mile and there was 8" of ice. Good news for the kids (and the parents ;) ).

Thats good news for the kids. I am a little concerned about the shore ice. I plan to stop by there today if possible. Are they planning on doing this on the main lake??

I stopped by and the shore ice was better than I expected. Checked in front of Eastwood beach and Baypoint. Used the spud about 50 yards offshore in front of Eastwood and ice was about 6". I am sure there is more in other areas but there is open water toward the south dam and I would not trust anything in that direction. The winds are supposed to be pretty nasty tomorrow. I may head out for a while in the morning and give it a try for a bit.
Edit....then again maybe not. Wind gust to 35mph:dizzy: .

Did they have their outing?? It was supposed to be today I believe.
Yes they had the outing ! Lots of sun - wind as bearable but a great day.
I try to post a couple of photos later -
Hats off to matt and the 4 H for a great outing
Dan
I have a photo of one of my sons first pike ever in the gallery. We caught
3 fish all over 24" . Both boys had a great day and mom & dad did to - if ice holds we will try again next week. I cant get the photo over this post.

Nice job and nice fish. Looks like you guys were out in front of Baypoint beach. How was the ice in that area?? How was the turn out this year?
Actual we were right of Eastwood beach looking at the lake from shore. fished between 6 & 10 of water. Ice was rock hard and 6 to 8" I drilled about 10 to 12 holes and all ice is the same. Hard to beleive when you look at the dam and all the open water. Turn out was pretty good but they busted the age groups out and had the under 8 year old off the ice I think at 12:00. The rest were 1:00 pm so the awards were not as crowded as last year. I think everyone there had a great time. I know we did. My son had his face in the hole when his fish poped up. he almost let everything go.
does anyone know is there a topo of the lake readily available - have not fished stoney during the softwater season. Picked up a 14' boat and would like to try and chase pike during the year.

Nice Derby! Thanks to 4-H!!!
It was my first time out this season and I was able to spend it with my son. :) Very Cool. The boy had a great time. We got 4 perch as big as my pinkie and a sun fish to match... He thought it was great!!!
If it wasnt for the wind it would have been great weather...

I am Matt's neighbor. I was out there punching holes in the ice and worked the weight station for him. He does not frequent this sight, so I will pass on the nice words. It is really a great event and all the kids go away happy, as you can see. Everyone should try and make it next year. Its a great way to introduce kids to the sport.

I met this little guy and his dad (Sam) out on the ice yesterday. They said they were at the derby and had a great time. He must have enjoyed it because he made his dad bring him back out since he did not catch a pike and really wanted one. We set up about the same time as them and after about five minutes I had a flag go up. I called him over and after a few slips and slides he made it. He set the hook and pulled it in by himself. He did a great job catching and a great job handling/releasing it. I don't know who was happier, him or his dad. I told him I would post his picture under this thread so he could check it out. He didn't last long yesterday in the cold but he accomplished his mission;) .
BTW...I fished Stoney Monday and Tuesday afternoon and did ok. No walleye but landed some good pike both evenings. My dad also landed a BIG largemouth on the rod. Most fish came on the tip-ups monday and more jigging last night. Ice was in pretty good shape.
