Decided to take a little road trip today and headed to Lake Ovid to see if it had any ice. Drove around to the boat launch and didn't see a soul on the ice. Did a little prospecting with the spud and was supprised to find some pretty solid ice. Went back to the truck and got my gear. I fished the south end about half way between the island and Price road on a good solid 4" of ice. I must have caught 200 gills. The problem is that they weren't much longer than the ice was thick  . Probably punched 30 holes looking for larger fish but never got out of the little ones. Then I met the local " Darwin Award Candidate " :yikes: . Thought I heard a quad, looked toward the boat launch, sure enough quad on the ice doing brodies. Then he sees me and drives my way. He gets about 50 yards from me and shuts it down " Catchin' anything? " I say I'm catching a ton but they are all runts no keepers. Then he asks THE QUESTION......." How thick is the ice? " :bash: . Sorry I just couldn't help myself  . I say " Don't you think that you should have checked that out before you brought that $5,000 vehicle out here. His answer was " Well, I didn't break through when I walked out on it so I thought it was alright ". Now is when I lie :evilsmile . I say " Well I'm on about 3" here but do you see those big areas that look like small drifts ? " He says, Ya. I say " Well there is only about 1" in those spots ." 1" ? Yep! Well good luck. I say you too. And with that he does about 80 back to the boat launch   :dizzy: . I didn't bring any fish home but it was a great afternoon out on the ice and having the whole lake to myself was just a bonus............Patch

Thats pretty funny patch. The fishing has not been very good there for the last couple years, actually 3. They have not been planting the redears lately either,at least they filled the gap sometimes, when only catching dink gills. seems the average size of the gills has gone from 7 inches to 6 and very few 8 inchers anymore. Ever since thet started treating the weeds the fishing has been worse, and they did not kill the weeds, go figure. Just my two cents

Patch:
I read your post yesterday at 9am. Took the afternoon off and headed out. I was SHOCKED to see that there was fishable ice....however, I think 4" may be a BIT generous:) . Anyway, I started in the cove by the boat rental docks, caught a couple perch. Then followed Mr Darwin's quad tracks (I could tell which ones were the ones heading out: the weaving, meandering ones, and the ones heading in: straight as an arrow: MADE ME LAUGH thinking about it:lol: ), then I found your holes. Opened about 8 of them and caught all the OTHER little gills that you missed::dizzy: . Fished till dark, hoping for a Crappie or two, but no such luck. Was a bit strange in the wind, snow and rain, but I was dressed for it, so no problem. Obviously had the lake to myself at that time as well.
Thanks again for the info!!!

Checked the lake and the edges are poor...open water to 1.5 inches...then when you walk out a few feet there is 4+ inches. If the wind dies down, I may give it a go.

I fished it again this morning. Ice was good! looks like it added an inch or two since the last time. Hit 4 different spots south of the island with the same results, dinks, dinks and more dinks  . I did have company today though, had a Red Fox come running at me from the island. It got to about 50 yards from me then realized what I was and high tailed it back to the island. Next time I go, it will be on the north end..........Patch

Patch, I don't want to send your thread askew, but what the he** is a "brodie"?
If it is ,what I would call a doughnut, than I am laughing my butt off. Not at you or your terminology. My wife & I have argued for 15 yrs. She,(and everybody else from Brighton/Howell I know) call "circles on ice" Spinning Cookies..This baffled me for years, as I called it doin doughnuts. Now you throw the brodie thing out there...I love it !!
Man ,if I have time to ponder this kinda crap, I need to check my head.
Or find some ice & get out fishin. Thanx for the report..,Mark
