Circle hooks

Has anyone fished with circle hooks under tip-ups? If so, how did they work and what size did you use?

I have tried using #8 for pike. No flags, but NOTHING NEW THIS YEAR!!!! As a result, no info re: how well they hook up. Seems a little harder getting the hook into the minnow, however. Hope I can learn more, if I ever get a flag!

I was just reading about them at Walleye Central. There's a posting from a couple guys using them with a little info.

Circle hooks have been used for years in salt and they are just catching on for fresh water fishing. The design of the hook is to roll to the corner of a fishes mouth and then bury into flesh. I used them this year fishing garden hackle for trout. It took some getting used to you don't set the hook all that happens is you pull it out of thier mouth. You just apply steady pressure and presto the hook goes to the corner of the mouth. Out of the 3 dozen stream trout I caught with these hooks everyone was hooked were it was easy to remove and they could live another day. Other than the 6 or so I kept for the pan. The only thing needed to change in your rigging is the hook. Remember just start pulling in line on a tip up once you have the slack out or you probably will be pulling in a empty hook.

i have been fishing with circle hooks for a few years now and love 'em.
use them for pan fish and and trout/salmon.
the most important thing to remmember is to aply pressure steady and the fish pretty much hooks itself.
easy to remove,the hook is usually in the corner of the mouth.
i like Dai-Riki in size 10 pretty much the only hooks i use.
strong like bull !!!


huntin and fishin ain't everything, it's more than that!!!
