For me it depends on the condition of the ice, not neccesarily the thickness. Good solid, hard ice that has been froze from still water is the best - 3 1/2" to 4" works for me. Ice that has gotten soft and refroze is a case by case situation that requires good judgement. Snowy slush can freeze into ice and that would also require a good judgement call. I've been on ice that was 3 1/2" thick with a quad and been comfortable with it. I've also experienced 8" of ice that I wouldn't even walk on.

They claim 6" is enough but since my atv is 1 yr old I'll wait for 10+ in.........

Neal - It depends on whether it's my ATV or yours that I'm driving. :D

My ATV weighs about 400 lbs dry, and I am another 260. So that is about 700 lbs in one spot. I would prefer a good solid 6 inches of ice myself.

Gimme 4" - 5" of CLEAR, HARD, "BLUE" ice and I'm out there !

Thanks for all the great answers.......I would love to join one of the ice fishing parties this winter and am anxious to get the quad out.
Thanks,
Neal
