Greetings.

I'm somewhat new to the fishing side of Mich-Sportsman as I'm a much more avid hunter. I dabble a bit with walleye fishing and do a 5-day trip in Canada every year. Last summer I purchased a duck boat that also doubles as a fishing boat (16' Lowe Jon Tunnel Hull with 25hp Mariner). I'd like to plan a family vacation this summer in an area that I can do a little walleye fishing on the side. Fishing won't be the main brunt of the vacation but I'd like to bring the boat along and fish a few mornings / evenings. I'm from the Flint area (Davison/Goodrich) and with a 20 month old daughter would like to plan something within a few hours drive from home. Last year we did a long weekend on the bay in Tawas but I didn't fish (no boat at that point). I was wondering if there were any good inland walleye lakes in mid or upper Lower Peninsula. My main approach is verticle jigging with minnows but troll a little bit on occasion too.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

thank you.

In all seriousness though... here is a link to an article that talks about some of the top Michigan inland lakes for walleye.

I am sure you will get more recommendations.... good luck and have fun in choosing your lake!!

You could try Houghton Lake area, there's several decent lakes to fish in that area. Not too far from home.

hubbard has a good late july and august bite. mainly a troll bite but those fish are pretty reliable. from davison you are looking at a three hour drive.

I'd recommend the lake Erie Islands. South Bass (Put In Bay), Middle Bass & Kellys will all put you around fish-accessable with a smaller boat. Depending upon when you go and how the weather has been, you will hit walleye, perch, smallmouth and white bass. They are about a 2 hour drive from Detroit. If you are camping, there are nice state parks on Kellys and South Bass. Lots of opther things to do also-and great warm water for swimming.

Go back to the TAWAS / OSCODA area , plenty of good fishin in the area , Tawas Bay has walleye , smallies , northerns . At times the peir heads in Oscoda can produce some nice walleye .Van Ettan Lake has both a decect walleye and perch fishery. Foote and Cook ponds also produce some nice walleye has well as a decent pan fishing .
