The presses are set to start running nexr monday.
Does that mean you will have them at the "Huntin' Time expo" in GR?

Probably not but it came mighty close.

The proofs sent by the printer were read and changed by me. I relayed the few changes to national by phone tuesday AM. The national also recieved proofs and noticed that there were a couple pictures that bled, which the National QDMA noted and sent their proofs plus my changes back today by Fedex to the printer for changes. I thought that that would be it.

No, the printer needs to make the changes , send new proofs back to national for more review and only when there are no more changes will the printer start the presses.

I talked to the printer today and hoped that they could pump out a couple hundred for the Expo, NO!

I have a set of proofs and it will be at the Expo in Grand Rapids for any to see. The book will be for sale and will be mailed within a week free shipping.

It is 182 pages in color and I'm amazed of the quality created by national. The national put in hundeds of hours in proof reading, editing and layout. They took out a lot of my silliness. I'm honored to be a part of this book.

In fact the printer told me today that he seldom sees a book of this caliber.

Chevyjam 2001,

I will be at the Birch Run Huntin Expo on the 3-4-5th of February and we should by then have the books. When is your banquet, for 'Im told by your much energized member Ryan Swartz that he and a couple others will be at the Birch Run Expo to help at the booth, (how about you, Chevy can you help). If your banquet is later, someone can pick up the books at Birch Run.

Our Executive Director Brian Murphy asked me if we could use the book as a promotional tool to increase membership. We (the Mid Michigan Branch)struck a deal that is beyound belief. Any branch can buy the book for $6 (absolutely rock bottom) and use it for any branch sanctioned event. They can sell it for the normal price of $20 and clear $14 profit, they can offer a new membership for the present cost of $30, (six issues of Quality Witetetails) and give the new member the book free. They pay the national QDMA $22 and keep $2 profit. How good can it be? The sale of this book cannot be made for any individual gain, it must be a branch sanctioned event and all net profits can only go to the branch.

There are now many differant events going on from food plot days, co-op formations, educational events, banquets etc. This could be a golden calf for a few years for all branches. Brians main goal is to increae memberships. Lets give him a hand!

Ed is at the Birch Run Huntin' Expo amd he has about 100 books. I have mine, and I'm sure that I will finish it (the first of a few times) this weekend. Although I have not read it, I'm impressedfrom what I've seen thus far. If you've been waiting for it for some time, it looks like it was worth the wait.

The semi load came in today. Will deliver a load of books to the person in charge of mailing them tomorrow.

I'm just as impressed as anybody with the quality of the layout and editing. The national QDMA did the proof reading with four of their experts along with Farm legend, ( MSF's word smith). The QDMA National Executive Director, Brian Murphy along with Managing Editor Lindsay Thomas did the editing.

The out come is indicative of what the national QDMA is all about, (QUALITY).

I cannot thank them enough!

As you all well know. I try to refrain from tooting my horn or pushing the book, but today is another day and I will say this, "after reading it, (twice) in the edited version I'm proud to be a part of this creation".

We will be at this weekend's Deer Spectacular in Lansing and the show special of recieving the book free with a one year's new or renewal membership in the QDMA for $30 will be availble. You will also reciebve six issues of a fabulous magezine. If you smile, I will sign your book.

Net proceeds go to the QDMA member branches of Michigan for conservation programs, with my life long goal of improved state land habitat being uppermost. Hopefully in ten years state land deer hunters will start to see a differance in their hunting experience.

This is not only my personal goal it is the goal of the Quality Deer Management Association, QDMA. We are concerned as much about the welfare of deer and their habitat on public, as on commercial or private lands.

Hello Ed,

Excellent book, reference your seed can you advise where or who it comes from.

Ed Spin04
02-06-2006, 07:00 PM
Rusher, the seeds comes from foundation plantings in Canada, Russia, Oregon, South Dakota, Colorada, Minnesota, Michigan, New zeeland and other northern locations I haven't researched the origins of. From many foundation plantings a few hybrids were created.

I recieved much help from University forage research professors and did many years of personal plantings of dozens of types and varieties before the present blend was selected. Only one seed variety is a grade type and that is Dwarf Essex rape, which was chosen due to its price and its high percentage of phousphorous. I expect to have an improved variety in a year or two to replace DER.

Rusher, this is not a finished product and it shoudn't be for one should be open for improved strains.

All but two, (alsike and chicory) of the perennial seeds are coated, which has been proven with countless trials to be better in germination, emergence and persistance of survival. These clay or peat coatings also contain the appropiate inoculant.

Seed coatings improve the germination and emergemnce rate highly. These coatings absorb moisture and prevent the seed from an early germination or temporay wet period and this saturated coating helps keep the young seedling from dieing from a short dry spell.

Only the higher and more expensive class of seeds are now coated. I have yet to see farm grade seeds coated, but since this process has been proven much more effective, expect to see this a common thing in the future.

Is there any way a person unable to attend any of these expos can take advantage of this offer? Either online or perhaps through a UP branch in my case? Thanks

YooperKenny,

Get in touch with North Jeff. He is the president of the Superior QDMA Branch. He is located in Wetmore, near Munising. They will recieve a box or two of the books. I see no problem in this. Jeff's last name is Sturgis.

If you have a problem or want it now, PM me and I will take care of it.

Ed - based on your response to yooperkenny, does that mean that you will extend the show special of a book and a year's membership for $30 to any of us who couldn't attend a show?

If so, do I contact my local QDM rep or you?

Yes, a QDMA new one year memberhip will intitle you to the new Ultimate Deer Food Plots book free plus free including. It has only been available at the sports shows. We will continue the offer for an indefifinte time period.

We will be at the MUCC Outdoorama next Febuary 22-26th. I will be there on the 22th and 23rd only for I leave for the Southeast Deer Study Group meeting in Baton Rouge LA. on Friday 24th AM.

It is available through all QDMA branches. The problem is, we just recieved shipment last monday and very few branches have the book or even know about this extended program. So until everyone catches up I will do the work of recieving the orders for new membereships and making sure you recieve a free book including shipping.

Make check of $30 payable to the QDMA, Mid Michigan Branch and imail it to QDMA, 24150 31 Mile Road, Ray Twp. Mi 48096. Add note, (includes free "Ultimate Deer Food Plots" book and shipping).

I just got the new book saturday at the hunting show in lansing. One thing right off the bat is that its a fun book to read, very well done. Learned something new from it already and that is fertilizer is a salt that if applied to heavily can hurt your soil ph. I was going to add 300lbs an acre of fert to my clover plots this spring, now ill add 200lbs instead. The books info is already starting to pay for itself.

A little disappointed - that's all.

This is the way I feel about it taking so long to get the books that I order so long ago. I purchased not only for myself, but for other's X-mas presents. I know that it was important for sales to have the book available for purchase at the shows, but there is a lot of guys out there that have order the book long ago and have been told "it's coming, it's coming. I just think that maybe they should have been a priority too.

And before anyone has to say it, I know - "it's coming, it's coming!":dizzy:

David, I'm sorry about the delay. I did talk to the book mailer yesterday and she said that all books have been mailed as of last friday.

The major reason for the delay is that the National QDMA asked me in January 2005 if they could be involved in publishing the book. It didn't take me long to say yes. They have a bi-momthly journal, "Quality Whitetails" to publish and mu book was worked on between. Let me say this, they did a high quality job and made me look polished.

The book was finshed my me last April and due to the delay one major chapter, "Planting perennials in poor and light soils" was added last October. This chapter details a five year program of planting legumes in public land that has very suspect soil, yet we succeeded.

Ed,

No need to apoligize sir! It just gets a little frustrating when you pay to get into the park early, but don't get ot ride the rides until late in the day.

To be honest, I can't wait to read the book. I purchased the first one and it went a long way toward helping me establish my two new plots created in 2005. I really look forward to the new book and the section that you spoke of "Planting perennials in poor and light soils". That is my food plot world. I also look forward to Tony L's portion.

Glad to hear that they shipped; I'll be looking forward to recieving it.
