I see the Michigan DNR has on their web site that we have App. 1,702,000 deer in this state. Dang near everyone I have talked to are seeing fewer and fewer deer every year, but the DNR says the herd is increasing. Seems to me they are just trying to pull the wool over our eyes. Take the above total and divide by 56,804, the total square miles in all of Michigan, heck thats about 30 deer per square mile , and thats counting Detroit and all the other large cities, roads, parking lots, everthing. How many deer do we really have ???? You can only guess , thats what the DNR does, my guess would be a lot lower than what we are being told. What do you think?????

I think their numbers are pretty good.
Dang near everyone I talk to, across different regions of the state, say there's plenty of deer out there to hunt.
Where does that leave us?

I think that their numbers are probably pretty good, within +/- 5% or so. One of the reasons that a lot of people in the NLP are not seeing deer is that not only is the herd down from the 2.1 - 2.3 million deer that it was in the early to mid 90's but the distribution of the remaining deer continues to shift towards the south. Is the population in the NLP down, sure it is compared to what it used to be. On the other hand TB has been pretty well contained and is no longer a major threat to our herd outside of the core counties. I would say the TB plan worked pretty well in that regard.
