Frozen battery on portable fish finder

I just started putting my portable fish finder together for ice fishing and the battery was frozen SOLID.What would cause this?The battery was 5 years old.I have to use the battery out of my vista-cam until I buy another one.I plan on hitting the hard water in a couple of days.

Do you mean the fluid inside the battery was frozen solid??? If so, the best I could figure would be that the acid/water concentration was too low, thus allowing it to freeze. ???:confused:

If a battery has low or no charge it will freeze.
Most times the battery is then ruined.
Thaw out battery then try to recharge.
