Hey Ive just been running a wire leader to a 14lb mono then to the dacron backing.. whats everyones favorite hooks bait etc etc.. I have some big goldies that I sorted out of the tanks at work today along with a couple medium size alewives and gizzard shad... hitting some cuts in the morning that just froze up!! Should be good for a couple nice northerns... as well as some nice crappies right before night.

Check out the post a couple of weeks back on quick strike rigs.

20 lb. dacron line, with a 15 lb. mono leader about a foot long.

I like using salted smelt. I thread a treble hook from the bottom to the top and then clip to the line. I fish this directly on the bottom and I give an extra foot of line before the flag trips.

I use this on the St. Mary's river in front of my house. It is a sand/muck bottom; not weedy. In weeds I still prefer dead smelt but I fish them about a foot or two above the weeds.

Do you have many bite offs due to the 15# mono?
I would think fireline or similar would be better?

Not when I fish on the bottom. I used this set-up originally for burbot and discovered by accident that the pike really like it.

I put these in front of my house in muddy water that is only 2 feet deep, and when there's a flag my 5 year-old son pulls them in. We catch maybe a dozen pike each year, and most are in the 25" range... although it seems like once a season we get one around 7-10 lbs.

I use a 6" steel leader when I fish over weeds in deeper water.
