I want to find a mono in 10 or 12lb that is good for bass and pike. I will be using it on a low profile baitcastin reel. I will be using crankbaits, large spinners, and other faster moving lures. Thanks for any help.

I pretty much used Maxima Ultragreen 10 pound line exclusivly last year for heavier stuff. It worked very well for my needs. I dont remember any breakoff's or failures, though who would. ;)

There is a new brand out called Cajun line. Its red line but totally dissapears when its in the water. I use it all around, check it out at walmart or Bass pro shops.

On all my baitcasters i use P-Line. There are 5 or so different types of it but i use the flourocoated kind. Really strong, no memory, good knot strength. Plus, i have had it happen with regular mono that it "slips" on the reel. This line does not do it. If i didn't use the pline i think i would use maxima.

For Steelhead in the Manistee River; 6, 8 & 10 Maxima
Tournament Bass fishing Using tubes, snack stix or grubs; 10lb P-Line floroclear
Tournament Bass Fishing using buzz baits, spinnerbaits, jerk baits and crankbaits: Berkly XL 12 or 14

When it comes to Fluorocarbon line, I use Bass Pro XPS and the P-Line fluorocarbon; BPS XPS Fluorocarbon is used in open water and P-Line is used around structure.

Now for Braided line, I use FireLine & Power Pro; FireLine is used in open water where I'm fishing more than 40 feet of water for those St. Clair River Smallies. I use Power Pro when flippin and in cover.

Why so many different lines? Trial and error while doing the various types of fishing that I do. What works for me most likely won't work for others. Soooooo many variables, what action rod, what type of reel, do you cross there eyes and rock the boat when you set the hook or what's the water clarity. Buy small filler spools of line and play would be my advise for everyone looking to fine tune their various fishing activities.

Dont you break off a lot of fish and lose a lot of lures using xl for heavy spinnerbaits and such? I figure since you are most likely casting those heavy baits on a baitcaster and it doent matter on any of those baits if your line is a little stiff, why not use xt or something with much more abrasion resistance? I enjoy casting my spinnerbaits on 20lb xt hook just as many fish, and as many times as I throw up tight to cover it rubs on a lot of stuff no worry about breakoffs and strenth. I have lost a lot of fish using xl in any situation where I am going to rub against and grass, logs, rocks etc.........just my opinion

Bucketmouthhauler,

I fish St. Clair most of the time and to be perfecly honest.....almost all OPEN water. I really don't need to worry about hitting docks, rocks or logs. Once again there are many variables in line selection and you covered a couple in your selection of line. I never have been a fan of XT, I really don't like how it comes off the reels or how it casts from the rod & reels that I use and everyone knows backlash is never caused by the angler, it's the lines fault!

Now, when I fish inland bodies of water and I'm fishing shoreline structure such as docks, downed tree's or rocks; I use P-Line Fluorclear 14lb.
