Can anyone recommend a good quality bird feeder that is at least somewhat squirrel resistent? I am tired of hanging up the $10 plastic feeders only to find them on the ground chewed up.

Thanks,

Buy a squirrel baffle and eliminate the bastard all together.

My buddy took hardware cloth and wrapped it around the post then hooked the electric fence to it. It was funny the first few days, but it didn't take them long to learn.

I like that hardware & electric fence idea.

Once at a college class a old lady asked this same question. I told her rather than have the birds fight with the squirrels, set up a separate feeder just for the problem squirrels. The best one is the chair/table stye that holds an ear of corn. The squirrel sits on the chair while eating the corn. This feeder must be correctly set up either on the right or left side of the tree as you face the tree. This lines up the sitting squirrel perfectly broadside for the crosshairs to line up and you won't be putting holes in the trunk of the tree.

I use a mixture of Creasote salve, (farmers refer to it as teat salve) and liquified it in the microwave and mixed in a very healthy amount of cayenne pepper. Once it cooled and returned to paste form I spread it on the pole and on the edge of the squirrel baffel. The cresote sticks to them and when they try to lick it off the cayenne does the rest. It's kept all but the most ingenious out of the feeder.

I think the only real way to squirrel proof a feeder is to put it in the middle of the yard about 10' off the ground with no trees or shrubs in site. I have never seen anything so determined to get at something as a squirrel.
