Has anybody tried using a howler call for bringing in coyotes?
I bought one last year and used it once. I did not have any luck while using it in an area full of coyotes. I used it around noon.
Is there a time of day it would work better?

Actually you get your calls down (howling) they may come at any time of the day. If you are just trying to locate them, I used to just drive the back roads about dusk and stop every 1/2 mile or so and try to get some feedback. I like to alternate between a male and female. Then maybe throw in my rabbit. If they are within a half mile or less from where you are calling many times they will not answer but, you can be sure they may be on their way to see who's on their turf.

I bought one two years ago. The first time I tried it was after coming back to camp from dinner. I was just kinda screwing around so I let go w/ a howl from the porch. I got such an immediate and close return howl I about wet my pants. There must of been a coyote about 30 feet from where I was standing and in the dark I didn't see him. I read somewhere the young ones will answer that call just because they don't know any better. I don't know if that's true or not.

personally I like to use the howler at night only. In the morning I like to use the rabbit squealer. At night use soft calling in case the yotes are close by. Then start aggressive calling including a howl. I try to sould like pups. Also when the big males get a running, then you can hunt all day. Watch on the fence lines.
