I've fished that lake for 20 + years. Ice is decent right now, but could be better.
The owner of the bait shop is a friend of mine. I know that he'd open up early if he knew a bunch of us were comming in.

01-06-2006, 12:08 PM
I did a drive around the lake this morning, saw 4 shanties out, one with a quad parked next to it over by the roller rink. Appeared to be a foot or so of open water/new ice on the shoreline but not all the way around. Stopped at the DNR launch and there is open water at the edge there and of course the outfall is open water.
For myself, I don't like ice fishing enough to make the trip sunday, with the forecast of 30 tomorrow and 38 sunday. That's my opinion, and everybody has one.
Good luck and Happy Fishing

Your not going to believe this, but there's at least
50 guys on Crystal right now 12/7 . 2 -6 inches of good ice.
There's even a quad out there.
Just got off the phone with Jeff at the Tackle Box, the local bait shop there in Crystal and he says that the fishing is HOT right now.
Limits of 12-14 " perch being caught, limits of Walleye and Gills as well.
Guys bringing quads and sleds can dump in at the new boat launch on the north side. Parking in front of the roller rink is OK too. BUT DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE ROLLER RINK SIGN, YOU'LL BE TOWED.
Talked to Larry this morning, and the outing is back on ! :coolgleam

Hey Larry, is the bait shop going to be open at 7:00? Sorry the wife cleaned my office and tossed your number or I would have called.
Also, are tipups a good idea or should I just leave mine at home if I make it?
Not 100% sure yet, but it looks like I might be there. Do you guys use the FRS/GMRS radios and if so what channel?

I admit I have been lurking on this thread for a while but was not committing to fishing until I knew if it was possible. Couldn't stand having my emotions toyed with as I haven't had a chance to fish yet this ice season. I am now planning on coming up from Kzoo area and hope I can hook up with some of you. If not at least I will be fishin.

Face with the posts, just remember, you asked for it. I jsut finished making myself a little snack, I was gonna make a big one, but I am hoping the new guy (other than myself) still brings that meat and cheese ;)
I am going to bring my little radio in case I am running late, so I can catch up with you guys, so if amyone else uses these bringing one would be great. I am going to try to find the post that tells the standard channel that the forum guys use and will post it here when I do find it!

Ok, dumbest question ever, but I want to make sure.
I was thinking about venturing out tonight but I have a question?
Where is crystal lake? how do I get there?
I asked my Uncle and he asked me which Crystal Lake because he knew of two of them.
Figured I'd swallow my pride and ask before I went and showed up at the wrong lake!
lol!
Hope someone can help! Thanks!
PS... I'd be coming from Lansing. (Just North of Lansing in St. Johns)

Go north on 127 to M57 west to you see the sign for Crystal Lake.
When you get to town turn left at the blinker.

I was out on the lake today from 11am-5:30pm. Never did run in to you guys. Were you guys in the north or west end? I didn't make it to those areas. My day was pretty slow, however a guy near me was putting on a pike clinic with multiple fish including a 36" incher. I did land an 18" inch pike that hit a wax worm on 2lb line in 50 ft of water. We'll have to meet up another time.

Near the north side of the island with the cottages on it.

Actully there is a 60ft hole northwest of the island and a 70ft hole south east of the island. I thought someone said ''there catching limits'':lol: Welcome to crystal lake, it can be very difficult to fish. I am pretty familar with how it gives up a limit one day, and not much the next 5 times you go.:gaga:

We tried to find the hole on the South side but never did. One guy had a topo of the lake and showed a spot across from a barn, by the skating runk, that had a nice drop off more to the SW of the island. Something to hunt for next time I guess. I hope I have my N, E, S, W, right.

I watched you catch that fish......you were right in front of us. :) I heard you say it first " I just caught a pike on 2lb. test !" I was in the 4 man Shapell 100 yards NE of you in front of the green hardside.
Landed 3 hammerhandles, no perch...........Oh well.
LMAO...... Looked over and saw one guy with his face stuck in his hole muttering. Walked over to see what was up.
He was Jeffery from the site and just dropped his Nextel down the drink. LOLOL Sorry man, it's not funny.
Those holes have a way of eating gear. Thanks for saving Mrs. Thunderhead from taking a ride across the lake when the wind caught our shack too. :)
The wind was pretty strong. A guy in a 1 man shack got blown right off his holes. Heard him cussin, looked over and his baits were laying on the ice.....LOLOLOLOLOL
He got mad, packed up and left after that.
Nice meetin everybody.

Hi Larry,
Stopped looking at the posts after the cancellation notice . Didn`t think to check anymore . Sounds like you guys had a good time . I left Frack at home and took Frick to a local lake where I knew there was safe ice. Arrived at the lake a 8:15 am . Had to leave at 9:30 . The CO is fond of writing over limit tickets. Drag you butt up my way and I`ll take you out . 30 lb brown and I have been kicking around hitting the tittabawasee if it stays warm.
:bash: It`s going to be how warm this week ? I don`t think I heard you right the 1st time.

For a guy with an outboard and no place to keep it warm, what needs to be done before and or after using the boat this time of year? I havea little 14' boat and an almost new 25 Merc on it and was thinking about going out and giving it a shot in the next few weeks, weather permitting.

my merc is a 2 pull wonder this time of year. make sure the gas ball is tight, prime it a few times and just let it warm up for a few minutes before you go off at full throttle - give it whatever choke she wants until it idles w/ out it.
leave the lower unit in the water while you fish.... don't tilt it up, might freeze if its cold enough.
once your back on the trailer, i start mine up for about 5-10sec to run the water out of the cooling lines.
